    Question Wobbly rear sprocket

    Hi guys,

Looking for some advice on sorting my rear sprocket, as thereís loads of sideways play in it at the moment (MOT failure). Currently its got a renthal aluminium 39t sprocket on it. The problem Iím having is trying to figure out how it should be set up, because the radial clearance between the sprocket and the carrier is quite large and I donít think it could ever have been a snug fit. Am I right in thinking that the radial positioning is governed by the segment shapes that are in the recess where the rubber shock segments are? The sideways movement seems to be loosely controlled, as there is only a spacer washer and a circlip to control this. Is it correct that sideways movement on its own is not a bad thing? Is it supposed to be like that?

Does anyone know who can supply the rubber shock segements (branded Imeca) or the carrier part?

Please post if people have had this problem in the past and what they did to fix itÖ.

My current train of thought is to replace the rear sprocket, carrier and maybe rubber segments, and then see what play is left. Or I may just make up a shim or sleeve as appropriate??

    Any help appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    Cheers Bananarep,

I wondered what the proper name was for the 'rubber segments'! However, I don't think replacing these on their own will fix my problem, as they seem in fairly reasonable nick...

I had this problem when i brought my bike. it turned out that the guy i brought it of had put a rear sprocket on that was a little bit to thin. i replaced it with the standard sprocket and it was fine.

Its normal that the rear sprocket has some play, normally the chain pulls it straight and aligns it perfectly. If you really have to much play just replace the cush rubbers, it should indeed solve your problem. You can easely test this, put your bike on a service stand, start her up, put her in first and push gently on the rear brake while turning the throttle a bit. That way you put a decent amount of tension on the chain and it should run straight.

The standard play on a new bike can be anything from 2mm - 4mm side to side, and thats on a bike that never been run! However is it a mix of the cush drive and the sprocket moving on the mounts?

My bets are on it just been the cush drive, if its excessive wear side to side when looking face on at the sprocket then the rubbers are worn.

Spoke to Speedaway earlier and they want £43.50 for replacement cush drive rubbers! Ouch!

I am still not sure the cush drive will solve my problems.

Maybe I'll post some pics later of the problem....

Does anyone know anywhere cheaper for Cush rubbers if I do need them. I found one for £29, but thats from Germany!

    Cheers,

    Cheers BananaRep,

Thats decent of you mate, mine's a '94 bike (3 spoke wheels), I presume they haven't changed? Yours are likely are likely to be in better condition than mine (41,000km's)...

Do you want something for them, or just postage and beer money?

    Cheers,

    Pete.
