Getting back on track, though, I wonder how difficult it is to have one or more gears custom made to the ratios we want? I just want an "overdrive" highway gear for getting to the twisties, which are an hour or more away.

robbiec is looking into getting a custom 5th gear set made. Maybe there's enough interest for a group buy?

Why would you want to torture the poor thing by lugging it along at 4000 rpm when they don't even start to run efficiently until 7000 rpm?

It always felt like I was torturing it by doing a constant 8000 RPM for an hour at a time trying to get to my riding roads. So which is worse?

there is a big difference between crusing and accelerating. During crusing there is much less stress on engine, less petrol etc. Lower rpm during crusing will make those engines take longer milage without additional stress. I understand, that when you pinch full throttle at 100km/h@5th gear@4000rpm, it will be a stress and generall no performance for a bike.

But think about it that way - I have SXV 450 and 12km of ride on highway for my track. I have to go round trip, which is 24km with 120km/h at sprockets 14/50 @ 9500 rpm or
    120km/h at sprockets 14/50 @ 6300 rpm

which would be better for engine, concerning I have 2 trainings per week ?

8000 rpm is right in the sweet spot! they don't even start to make good HP until after 6000. I've been running the rev limit at 13,500 on some custom maps with no issues. The SXV will run all day at 8K.

That’s one of my 500cc engines running 15/48 sprockets at the PPIHC this year. The elevation where this was taken is just under 10,000 feet.
