    It just gets better

So Iím riding home today and I get the gear thing so I pull over to stop the engine and turn off the ignition. I wait the minute or so and try to start it again. Nothing. Nada. Then the screen goes blank as in it looks off. I pull the 30 amp fuse to reset whatever it resets. Tada I get a ecu disconnect picture on the screen. I try everything a couple of more times and I end up with the dash lights flashing like some disco show and no start. Never did turn over. Then I find out the hard that when law enforcement calls for a tow truck the rate doubles.

The ECU disconnected thing *may* be a problem. That is often the sign that the ECU is bricked but it may also be the ECU fuse has blown. I had this issue on my Griso recently. In that case I'd had the arse end of it out for some reason and that included removing the speedo sensor. It fired up fine on the bench after it was back together but when I pushed it off and tried to start it? Nothing, and the ECU disconnected icon.

Now the W5AM ECU is pretty much un-brickable so I checked the fuses and sure enough the ECU fuse was blown. The same fuse also feeds the speedo sensor and since I'd had the back end apart it was logical to check that first.

    That'll do it every time!

I must of pinched the cabling somehow. What a pillock!

    Check yer fuses.

BTW that wear potentiometer is on its way to you.

so all wires in good shape. all fuses in good shape. battery was a little low and went to 80% in less that 5 minutes. no sign of fault code/error message and bike starts right up. i don't have confidence in the bike now. could it have been related to the "gear" mode thing?

Maybe but unlikely. Certainly riding it with the clutch not engaging is disconcerting and dangerous! More than enough to cause a lack of confidence! Try the potentiometer when it arrives and let's hope that cures it.

Sounds like the battery might be on its last legs as well. Without it acting as a buffer there may be all kinds of odd things happening if the voltage is fluctuating with engine speed.
