Harley Ultra Glide - I may never

So a good friend has a Harley Ultra Glide. I was traveling and left my 2018 Tuono RR in his garage. Somehow his ultra ended up in my garage so I rode it the 45 + plus miles to return it.

I have owned many motorcycles and rode countless others. I hope I never get so old I need to ride an ultra. A great slab touring bike and he has ridden 22000 miles in a year. He really rides it hard in the canyons surprisingly but clearly designed for the open road.

But so big and so heavy and not for me. The running boards and radio and snifter and pedal are so strange.

Maybe a diavel in my future ( no comments on my age ) but the Harley allure did not resonate with me .....
I respect everyone who rides - vespa and grom to big gold wings - not in a cage. But that Ultra is just not my style....

It certainly seems - lots of low end torque and low RPM

I rode with a few mates in Spain and Portugal last week. One lad who has an 1800 Fat Boy is surprisingly quick, we'd ride for 45 minutes, stop for petrol or drinks. Dismount, get the helmet and jacket off then we'd here potato potato potato as he came into view. After 7 days his footboards were razor sharp along the edges and his crankcases were starting to get ground away. Harley's are quicker than many people think.

^^^Sounds like a great way to spend a week FTM! and +1 on the potato potato potato sound effect.

It must have been the weekend for it, NorCol. My wife wanted to go two-up on Sunday so I traded bikes with a friend who has an '03 Dyna wide glide all ape-hangered with super loud frappy exhaust and skulls all over it. What a heavy, ill handling toad of a motorcycle. I'm in the 'never harley' camp as well.

    Rumble and others

It is personal taste- and I am pleased to call Harley riders as friends. I was in the mountains of Colorado years ago on a "nera" Gen 2 and ran into a national convention meeting of "hells angels" - multiple state chapters. Great guys and we shared gas and they escorted me out of town.

They are just not for me - as noted heavy and ill handling.
If I had to have a cruiser the Diavel looks like a real viable alternative and much cheaper that a big twin Harley.

Friends bought an Ultra new in 2016.
It's had 3 motors in it, all done under warranty.
I never liked feet forward and really hated it after riding one in the rain.

My Street bob dyna is 1730cc (106 cubic inch) and it makes 124 RWHP on a dynojet. It's almost as fast as my Gen 2 Tuono! When Harleys are built right , they can go very quick . That being said, stockers are slow cows.

It's not Harleys that are slow as a glacier, it's the riders. I had a Fat Bob re-sprung/valved/2-1/2 inch longer shocks to give actual cornering clearance and proper suspension action.
I could embarrass most sport riders in the mountains with it because most riders are unskilled, and the truth is it could be ridden a lot faster than you would ever guess by looking at it (comfy seat, all that chrome, what a POS!).
The looks on their faces at he end of the road were worth wrestling with that overweight and under powered cruiser.....for a while, then I traded it (for 110% of original price!!) on a new RT.
A finish is a win! Moderation is the key! More wine!

I had an 89 low rider custom. Once I trashed the fork innards, shocks, exhaust, input and ignition system it was very good. Handled decent and the thing was near bulletproof. Did a few 800 mile days on it. Dave is right about the riders though. I did try to ride my friend's ultra glide. Rubber mounted handle bars, rubbery clutch. Not a fan. There are a lot better ways to eat miles.
    Bikes:
    2007.5 Tuono-Black, with 1102cc's of micah's badness!
2012 Griso-Silver and black, Agostini pipe, some carbon bits.
2006 Vespa GT200-bitubo suspension all around, Malossi big-bore, head and cam, Akrapovic pipe, all put together by Micah.

gone 2002 Caponord-Oyster gray (as faithful as a hound dog)
gone Futura-Red (on the AF1 showroom floor. Get some.)

The more I learn about people, the more I appreciate rocks.

+1 on this....Kiwi GP racer Paul "Loopy" Lewis challenged anyoneone without an ACU (race) licence to race him around some U.K. Tracks on his Harley, riding whatever sports bikes they cared to bring. IIRC he promised to give the Harley to anyone who could beat him. I don't think he ever gave the Harley away - can you remember anything about this FTM (or was I just taken in by some publicity stunt) ?

I remember a fair few years ago an aquaintance had helped set up 'Just Harley's' in Newcastle, UK. He badgered me for ages to take out a bike and "I'd love it", "didn't know what I was missing" etc, etc.... So, I eventually cracked and took him up on his offer and set off with the Mrs on an Electra Glide Ultra Classic with the mandatory 'wake the dead' pipes fitted. At first I was ashamed of the noise I was making, then I was ashamed of the traffic I was holding up - crikey this thing was slow. Eventually after fighting my way though heavy traffic we broke free of the confines of Newcastle and headed West. After 3 miles at 60mph my head was battered, the noise of the pipes, the horrendous wind buffeting and the atrocious riding position had me in tatters ! So, we spun around and headed back, both relieved to get off the lump. In short it was the least comfortable bike I've ever ridden. At 6'2" I'd have thought it would be fine but everything was in exactly the wrong place for me. So there it is, they look comfy but are a torture machine that doesn't stop, corner or accelerate as well as a decent 125cc bike ! At least I tried one...
