    Time goes by, names change

In 1982 I had a Yamaha Vision and bought the 83 version with full fairing when it came out. I really liked that bike, it became a 160+ mile daily commuter (total both ways) for about a year. It never skipped a beat. I'd already been riding for almost 20 yrs on the streets and had bigger bikes but the Vision just got my goat.

Not too long ago I was talking to a fellow who was in his riding gear at a coffee shop and we were discussing favorite bikes. I went on about my Vision and ran through the things I liked about it, the wind coverage, the riding position, the torque from the V-twin and the smoothness of the engine. I bragged about the handling. The guy says he had two as well, sold one but now has another and it was just the best bike ever. Then he asks me if I'd like to take a look, it was parked around the corner. Hot diggidy dog.

We rounded the corner my mind swimming in anticipation on seeing what was no doubt going to be a beautiful bike from the past but looking like it came out of the showroom yesterday. There sat a Victory Vision. I wasn't quite right for days.

I am gunna put it out there and say that mm will win two more titles with Honda to equal the hated ones record. Then jump ship to another bike. Iím gunna say Suzuki or Ducati. Yuall heard it here first.

It's a bit late now, but you could have started your own religious cult.

1983 Yamaha Vision then Current Victory Vision now. I'll admit to owning several of #1&#3 but couldn't do #2 or #4.

I also had an XZ550 Vision years ago. Mine was a 1982 model, red with the optional fairing, identical to the fairing on the 1983 except for the color. I bought it new, non current and deeply discounted. I recall they were selling for $1200-1800. I put 34,000 miles on it before I totaled it in a low speed drop on wet pavement. The only modification was a 4-piston Performance Machine front caliper for stronger brakes for the single disc, which they upgraded on the 1983 model. Yeah, I really liked that bike. Remember the heated vents in the fairing too, that you could open or close to keep your legs warm.

If I could find a really good condition 83 Vision now I'd jump. There was something about that bike. I remember hunkered down behind the fairing, speedo sitting on 75 doing the 11pm commute thing- about 78 miles one way, 6 days a week. Had once rectifier blow bit bike ran long enough to get me home. Thing looked like Legos in a hot oven. Yeah, those vents really did work as knee warmers, way ahead of it's time. For a 550 it had punch. The big Sabre was nothing more than a hyena in a big metal drum you let out to eat stuff once In a while.

That motor had a really nice feel to it and it just purred along on the highway, very smooth but not boring. The engine was basically two cylinders taken from the V4 Venture/V-max, downdraft carbs that looked like they were copied from Webers. I always thought they would come out with either a 750cc or bigger version of the Vision, but I guess the world just wasn’t ready for that style, you either were wowed by the design or hated them.

I had two a red 82 and then Yamaha put out that ad, something about last year we had a vision, this year we had a revelation. Black with Gold pinstripes, just ticked the boxes. Put the 82 in the back of a truck and drove it to the selling dealer and went away with the 83.
