    Tail-Light Cluster

    Hi all..

I've recently got my RST Futura out of mothballs. (Owned since 2005).
    New fluids, filters, tyres, etc..
    It's my new favourite bike!

During a cleaning session yesterday after a terrific run out in the Lincolnshire Wolds, I noticed that the rear left-hand indicator lens was missing!
Looks like it just dropped off.
Since there looks like no other fixing method, I guess it was just clipped in?

    Anyhoo..
Not surprisingly, this part is 'not available to order', neither is any part of the rear light assembly.

So.. Has anyone out there got this indicator lens tucked away on a shelf?.. or even a whole tail-light assembly??

It seems ridiculous that this brilliant bike is now to be kept off the road for the want of a small piece of plastic.

    Sorry boncer.
Do a search and you'll find methods to keep your turn lenses from falling off,
which unfortunately is not 'Stickied', and also too late for you.

There are also posts about alternate tail light assemblies.
I bought a replacement Aprilia tailight. The plastic is total crap.
It is presently held together with epoxy & screw clamps.

    Hey rblue02..
    Thanks for your reply.
I've searched for any threads on this forum but couldn't see any. Can you give me a clue on how to find them (if they're any help in solving the problem)?

At his point, yer best bet for OE is to look for a whole one being broken down for parts. Not sure the lenses were ever available separately.

Maybe something like this would work https://www.ebay.com/itm/Brake-Tail-...QAAOSw~4hby2DN

at least you could pay a visit to a Yamaha shop and see one.

Found lots of threads concerning fixing broken mounts and securing lenses,
but I could not find the aftermarket taillight I remembered.
Anyway, found this good idea --->
    Not Futura stock, but workable.
I could picture a larger Stop Light that would hide most of the rest.
    And black paint....

    Thanks RAS & rblue02..

Interesting stuff but not really what I'm looking for.
The bike is mint and original and that's how I'd prefer to keep it.

In the meantime, I'll keep up a steady effort with 'breakers' & Ebay, hoping I can eventually land the part(s) I need.

Interesting development. I'm told our local University could 3D print new ones (in the appropriate material), using the r/h lens to scan from!
    We'll see where that goes...

I'd prefer it looking stock as well. Having it 3d printed will be truly cool. Good luck. Definitely post up picts if that's successful.

It's been an interesting couple of weeks..

The plan was to remove the r/h indicator lens.. which I quickly found wouldn't budge without removing the whole tail-light assembly.

This opened up a new world of pain!..
As described in other threads, it's impossible to remove the tail-light assembly without damaging (breaking!) all three of the plastic mouldings which house the threaded inserts.
One was already broken, one broke as I tried to remove the bolt and the last one teased me by the threaded insert merely rotating in the plastic moulding. Downcast, I realised that I had to actually deliberately break the third plastic moulding in order to get this bloody assembly out.

The only task left to do for this phase of the job was to simply remove the r/h indicator lens.
You'd think that since the l/h lens merely dropped off, the r/h lens would come away easily.... Oh no! It was firmly bonded to the reflector behind. I mean firmly!!

It took 4 hours with a fine bladed Stanley knife to slowly slowly nibble away at the adhesive holding the lens on.
Another hour then to clean up the edges for the liberated r/h lens.

Aha! Now to get it over to my guy at the Local University (who is confident he can 3D print an new pair of lenses).
Who knew UK universities have a 2 week holiday at the end of May...
    So, I wait..

I've owned this bike from nearly new and I really like it.. but I'm still astounded by the poor detail design and lack of attention at the factory.
Of course the plastic brackets will harden and break, they sit directly above the underseat exhaust! Since there isn't a hint of heat protection, this has been 'cooking' the plastic since 2004. No wonder it breaks.
This is on top of the 'brown connector', reg/rectifier, fuel line, dashboard, etc etc..

OK. Rant over.. I feel better now.

    Stand by for further instalments..

Yes, the assembly is made with unsuitable materials,
from questionable design, and zero replaceable parts.

I think, it would be useful to create a list of spare parts, which better to buy now, before they completely dissappear on eBay.
English is not my native language, so please be kind to my mistakes.

Remember, this is an Italian bike with an Austrian motor, it isn't like the GSXR you use to own...

    Hi iamdude..

    You're absolutely right..
I'm going to start my list today.

Recently I've noticed that 'New Old Stock' original tinted windshields are now impossible get.
I think I may have got the very last clear one from the factory, which is fine but being clear just isn't right for the bike. (Tinted after-market windshields are available but look thin and cheap and the lines are not correct.)
Also, anything to do with the panniers and particularly the fixings and mountings are impossible to find.

I'm sure the list is long!

Yes 3D is the solution, & with the poor design details , have a look there : https://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/...rluigi+marconi
And I advise all fut owners to glue these lenses whith transparent silicone sealent.

I did JBWeld tabs on mine to keep them in place, but if you can make a batch of 3D printed ones you could sell them with ease!

    I made a turn signal lens. Very crude, but it works ;
