I have to hold the throttle open a bit to start the bike from cold, I want to just be able to hit the starter and have it fire up. I also have to hold the revs at like 2k for 30 secs once started before it will idle on its own. I have to have the throttle slide as far open in the pic at idle, which seems a lot? Does this suggest too large an idle jet?
I currently have a 34 and thought 32 would be quite small for my setup. I do have an overly rich main jet just now for running in. Going to go down from 98 to 96 I think.

Are you using the choke for starting?

Yes. When I hit the starter button alone I get a vroooom of fire up then it stops , then I need to hold throttle on to get it to start and when I can let go and let it idle it idles very low at about 1000rpm before gradually climbing as it warms up.

This is with the air screw tuned with the usual method and a good spark plug. To be fair I will try a brand new plug when I get one but the couple I have tried have been clean.

The air screw is out about 2 turns with the 34 jet.

Changed to a 32 idle and 96 main so hopefully will get even sharper pickup.

The running in plug has shown it’s been plenty rich ! Replaced it as well

    air leak ?

Get your confidence back with Aprilia.

caution: the use of motorcycles may be habit forming. side effects include purchasing multiple examples of the same bike, in different states of tune, different years, or different models altogether. some motorcycles may be not running when purchased. some parts are no longer available. there are rare instances where aprilias are bought over the internet and upon arrival, they are not as were originally disclosed. there is a small group of people who cannot handle two stroke engines and motorcycle maintenance. if this is the case, you may not be a candidate for Aprilia RS250's.

Aprilia. Ask your doctor if the RS250 is right for you.

I don’t think so, checked for those before. I have been adjusting the idle and air screw to try to get it to keep running when first started and be acceptable when warm.

Not having a lot of luck. It’s strange it fires immediately for a second then dies until I give it throttle as well as starter. Wonder if my halogen headlight is making the starter slower? I’ll check the battery voltage.

Just remembered I put a new coil on it a few months ago as bike was getting slower when warm but I think that was just the top end.
    Might try that old coil.

Halogen headlight would only affect this is your battery was low to start with
when warm what's the tickover rpm
Coils last a long time but if they start to break down they can feel very hot to the touch and produce a weaker spark.

Got it set up better and rides great , always idles fine but still needs a bit of throttle to start.

Idles at 1200 when cold and 1500 when hot. Played around with air screw and idle a bit and it still always wants a little throttle to start.
No big deal really I’ll just live with it.

Shall we play guess that noise ? Noticed a whirring from clutch or gearbox when I was coasting with the clutch in. Took a video spinning the back wheel on my paddock stand and this is the noise it’s making. Just when I’m enjoying the new top end kit too

I can hear it on the sprocket side and the other side. Hoping it’s as simple as the
chain being sticky - I did spray some motul lube on it but I’ll give the links a wiggle tomorrow to see if they move ok.

Noise was quieter this morning I’m guessing due to gearbox oil being cold and thick.

Think its just the chain. I lubed it without cleaning recently, but cleaned it this time and all sounds smooth spinning the wheel. Tension is to spec. Will test it soon.

Can tell I’m a newb to geared bikes, I had no idea the chain could sound so horrendous.

Next issue I’ve noticed when holding clutch in and coasting - I can hear a whirring which sounds like a wheel bearing to me, it’s that sort of faint whine type noise. I think it’s the rear one.
I thought it might go away when I’d cleaned and oiled the chain and it wasn’t making that noise but it’s still there grr lol
