and I thought I had seen it all -texting while riding

When I and a friend ride we often pick up other riders we pass - and in traffic we normally group together. We can among a young man - nice Fz10 and helmet, jacket, boots. Then as we continued on a divided normal access for lane highway at 60mph plus he reaches in his back pocket and pulls out his cell phone - he then looks and with no hands on bars ( I presume a simple cruise control ) looks down and text's a message - yes two hands - head down no awareness of what is in front - he finishes the message - places phone in back pocket and rides as normal

yes light traffic but no limited access and in fast lane

That rider has an appointment with the pavement if he persists texting while riding. I don't know what the obsession is with people and texting but it causes lots of accidents. About a year or so ago I read of a rider who was killed texting, no message is worth your life or serious injury

About two years ago I saw a skinny jean'd, helmetless, furry collar fashion leather wearing hipster on a cafe'd Honda CX500 taking a selfie while riding - moving slowly, swerving, and holding up traffic.

I'm still kicking myself that I wasn't wearing my helmet camera that day.

i won't self incriminate and confirm or deny but it's pretty easy with tank bags, and as long as you know what's going on around you, meh.

I keep my cell phone secured in a pocket whenever I'm on two wheels, I would never think of texting, talking or even looking at my cell phone while I'm on my bike. When I stop for gas or lunch that's when I'll bother with my cell phone.

The problem is you don't know what's going on around you, you only think you do. Everyone who has ever been in an accident while texting or talking on their cell phone thought they knew what was going on around them.

I too have seen the foolish rider on a HD texting in heavy traffic at about 55 mph. Maybe a quick polishing of his hips on a low slide at about 45 mph while NOT texting will change his mind. Take a dump while texting will catch him completely unaware and will likely end his riding if not his life. No chance of learning his lesson and becoming a better rider then.
Wife's rules for everyone in the family while riding:
    1) Helmets and armor each and every ride.
    2) Bluetooth headsets with cameras so we can ride as one and there's video of crap like this.
Strictly enforced by her as only a former Drill Sargent can.....

Cell phone is the LAST thing I will be using while riding. Literally and figuratively. ...........

I ride to escape daily bullshit/grind..........even when riding to work. Idiot..........his date with pavement or another vehicle and subsequent hospital visit await.

I'm a single parent and I keep my phone in the inside pocket , I can feel the phone vibrate when I get a call. I thought about getting a Bluetooth set up for my helmet but then I thought about it, I would be leaned over in a nice mountain road and I can picture the phone call " Dad you know where the scotch tape is ".....

I'll never forget when I saw a guy in Charleston on a Ninja pull out onto a busy road with his helmet propped up on his head, talking on a cell phone with his head leaned over wedging the phone against his shoulder....and his right foot in a walking cast propped on the peg

    RIP in advance.

This isn't all that unusual. See any group of younger riders and it doesn't take long before one of them starts with the smartphone either while riding or at a stoplight. I make it a point to get far away from them, I don't need their destiny affecting mine.
