I've wanted to fit some Dyna coils for a long time but just never wanted to pay the price.

Damn ! that thread is a long time ago, seems like three of my life times I sqeeeeeze into one some how..........

I've added up date to the last page of that thread, it seems more use there as I hadn't been back to that thread or read some of the input there, it's about the time I got tooo busy for the web.

One thing I will say & it's an oldie but a goodie......" if it ain't broke don't fix it."...............it can be a real big can of worms you are opening

Where might one find that? Searching 'punnisher lives again' produces nothing but this thread.

Thanks guy's. Ned, I hope you'll do a piece on fitting the coils. Very interested.

I've always thought the standard ignition system was barely adequate. Plugs get a little worn and performance really suffers. I've installed high energy systems on bikes and cars that transformed the machine.

Isn't the problem the high primary resistance on the engine control unit of 3-5 ohm, which limits the choice of coils? 2nd gen has primary resistance of 1 ohm I believe.

If there are coils available that meet that requirement, what's the problem?

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but if we're limited to high primary resistance coils because of the ECU, how do you get a stronger spark? Isn't this why Evoluzione had the big ignition amplifier instead of simply swapping coils?

So I'm wondering if the ECU is the limiting factor, or if the went for the 3.5ohm coils to keep current draw down.

Because people who specialize in making high performance coils know how to do things. Higher performance coils have been a common upgrade for cars and bikes for many decades. Surely those ignition systems had limitations on primary resistance as well. I'm not sure where you learned that the ECU was a limiting factor or that we were limited to so-called high primary resistance coils. The spec on the standard coils is 2.8-5.2 ohms so it would seem anything within that range would be safe but I am no electronics expert. It's clear that the oem coils were chosen for economy rather than performance.

All the Evo ignition amplifier did was raise by a couple volts the current fed to the coils primary side.

I've just sent an inquiry to DYNATEK and will report their response.
