    Project SMX

    Aprilia MX 125 rebuild project.

    Hi all -
    I am in the process of rebuilding my 2007 MX 125 and thought I would share my handy work with y'all. Here is my bike when I first bought it;

    I sanded out all the casting flaws and smoothed all the edges on the swing arm. Then I spent many more hours polishing her up so she's now super shiny;

    Very ambitious! Looks a bit like a KTMish orange on the frame. Those are very beefy forks?

    Nice work.

    Thanks man, there the stock 41mm Marzocchi forks. I decided to have the frame powder coated orange as it's also an Aprilia colour and something different from the mostly black & red Aprilia bikes which you see.

    Once I had enough parts refurbed and ready to be refitted, the rebuild started with humble beginnings:

    More parts fitted, so that I could get a rolling chassis, ignore the wheels as they are just a temporary set;

    I also got the Magura Hymec clutch fully installed and working now too. She took a bit of setting up and after several bleed's, a full strip down and rebuild of the slave cylinder I have finally got her working. I can't wait to test her out for real, but first impressions is that the clutch is buttery smooth to operate!!!

    I had to modify the clutch arm to follow the curve on the clutch case, as the arm would not pull the clutch cam lever properly otherwise and it also stopped the cam lever from retracting back as well;

    I re-used the OEM clutch cable and cut off the end, as it has a rather nice double oil seal on it. Plus it moves the slave cylinder away from the clutch case, thus providing room for the oil pipes to neatly tuck behind it. I also cut a piece off the plastic protection sleeve and used that to join the slave cylinder to the old clutch cable. I also found a U shaped bracket I had lying around which was nearly a perfect fit to secure the slave cylinder. I just used a longer bolt and added some washers to keep it all secure.

    After some adjustments I was able to get her working really well, I will only know for-sure once the engine is running and I can test the gear shifting out properly, as the Rotax engine does not seem to like shifting up and down the gears without the engine running. As I had some problems with the grip shift mechanism sticking whilst testing the Hymec. So I had to remove the clutch case and strip the grip shift down, to clean it all up, re-grease it all and reassemble it to stop it sticking. But after much fannying around and tweaking she seems really solid now, but the true test will be with a running engine, so it's TBC..................

    Really nice work that would likely be even more appreciated in the Off Road section of this forum than on the Scooter Specific section your posting it on.

    Have you also posted this in the Off Road section or since its not one of the V-Twins that forum is specific to possibly General Motorcycle Talk so more off road riders can also enjoy seeing this?

    Hi and thanks, I did not know which section to post this to when I started the thread, so I just went with this one as there does not seem to be a 125cc section, only a section for RXV's and SXV's. The bike is a Supermoto and not an off-road bike, so if one of the admins would kindly move it to that section along with other Supermoto's or perhaps create a new section/sub forum? Then that would be awesome!!!

    Not sure if they ever brought smaller than the MXV 450 VTwin Crossover into the USA where this forum is based which is a shame since the smaller MX Single bikes can be a ton of fun. On occasion I do see one of the small climber models for sale but that is pretty rare here.

    The MX were considered Moto Crossover Off Road bikes here and sold with Knobby Tires on them in 2009.

    The RX and SX were sold with either knobby or street tires on them in the US:

    WOW interesting, I guess Aprilia thought that the MXV off-road version would be more popular???

    I did not know that this was a US forum, I guess that the smaller CC bikes are more popular over here in the EU.

    The SXV is my dream Supermoto!!!

    It's designed to fit the stock reed block, so some mods were called for. Once I had cut off the reed flange, I set about port matching it as best I could to the new Italkit Carbon reed block;

    She's not perfect, but it is lovely and smooth, I feel that it turned out pretty good, so she's all ready for fitting now, along with that shiny 34mm Dellorto carb I purchased some months ago.
