    '01 Scarabeo 50 2t strip down question...

Can anyone tell me how these gears are held in place? I've searched everywhere, it seems - and no luck on an exploded view. I've removed the starter, and from what I can see - the uppermost gear is what the starter gear engages, and it seems to be held in place with a combo of rust, grunge and oxidation. Maybe enough penetrant and tapping on its shaft end will be all it takes to pop it out? The large gear on the crank? No idea of what all those teeth engage - it seems to be a friction fit on the crank - I can get slight rotation out of it - and I'd sure like to know how to properly remove it before I destroy something. Thanks.

If you put some kerosene on a rag and start wiping the parts down, it'll clean right up. If you're taking it all apart anyway to tidy it up, put kerosene into a spray bottle and spray it all over the gears, it'll come loose in no time!

Joel - thanks for the advice...but how do these gears dettach? Are they simply a press fit?

My ADD kicked in...I used a long small diameter rod and a small hammer to lightly tap on the end of the small gear's shaft - visible once the starter has been removed - and it came out. The large gear submitted to some light tapping to make it rotate - then it pulled off. A lot of rust penetrant went into this removal...and, yep. They just fit in...no fasteners to remove.

ummm...most of the time you would use a crank puller....i have a feeling you are going to need new bearings and seals for that crank ....that being said - holy crap thats filthy!!
