Dead dashboard & the usual fixes did not work

    Hi,

My dashboard died and thanks to this forum i got a few good pointers on where to start fixing it. Unfortunately it does not work yet.

I have a 2002 Caponord with 90k on the clock.

    What happened
The first time the dashboard went dead was 3 months and 3000km ago. After a very small break i started and the dashboard was dead. I drove off and after 2 minutes or so the dashboard started up as it would normally at turning the ignition key.

Then the symptoms did not show for 2 months.

When on a roadtrip through the Balkans (yay TET!) the same thing happened again sporadically at first. Sometimes it would boot 'delayed', sometimes it would be normal, sometimes it would not boot at all. After a few days the dashboard never came back to life.

    What did i do
I replaced the three capacitors, although they did not look faulty. When reading Karls moto-abruzzo website this seems a logical thing to do though.

I also made the via that meanstrk points out in his post on the subject. This via was indeed not working.

    Current symptoms
The dashboard does not do anything, except the leds for kickstand, oil pressure, efi and neutral. With both the contact off and on, the efi light glows faintly:

(pics are when i added a via myself (i'm a bad solderer) and the capacitors were not changed yet. The symptoms are the same)

    Now what
I'm not really sure what to do next. One thing is that i'll trace the circuits to find other bad via's (um, i'll ask people way more skilled than me to help me do this.. i mean). Is there anything else you can suggest, or should i cave and ask someone to have a go at it? (moto-abruzzo or beasthonda i guess?)

Someone here replaced the instrument cluater with an aftermarket product and it sure looked nice. If my cluster takes a dive that direction seems attractive, never worry about it again.

Think it was an acewell dash

This might help. No connection and no personal experience with them so not a recommendation, just info.

Thanks for the replies. The repair address in SF sounds good, but since i'm based in the Netherlands i'm better of at Carmo i think.

The progress so far is limited. What i've done:
    • Replaced all 3 capacitors
    • Replaced the faulty L4838ED voltage regulator (twice). It outputted 3.5 volt on the out2
    • Wired the big capacitor to the zener diode
    • Checked most connections for faulty circuits

The behavior is now that the board doesn't turn on. The EFI LED lights up brightly and the gas led light up faintly.

Next, I replaced the voltage regulator and applied a constant 5V to both out1 and out2. Then, when putting 12V on the permanent and ignition pins, sometimes the background leds turn on, sometimes they don't.

I suspect that something is off with the processor booting up. The L4938ED should get a 'sense' signal from the processor that enables the out2 circuit to be active. This doesn't always seem to happen.

I'm sort of lost now, so suggestions are welcome. The motherboard is at a friend of mine who is experienced in electronics (and has everything from a scope to a heat gun that you can use to solder ic's). So i should be good in trying anything, just need the inspiration now

Legs 14 to 17 on the regulator chip are connected to each other and then to a ground via hole under the regulator chip.
This was sometimes the problem. So check you have a connection to ground on any of these pins.
If you do not then re-connect to ground

I checked the ground of the regulator, but that was not the case unfortunately. Just to be sure i did run a wire in the via below the regulater, but no change.

I have also replace the regulator with an other one and still no-go. The power supply circuitry and components seems to be good. The problem is more or less pin pointed to the processor.

Next step: buy a new/2nd hand dash, or replace the processor.

Capo dashboard for less than 30$.

The only downside is You don't have any guarantee it works (seller says it should work) and this guy doesn't send abroad I think. Besides that, he has lots of Capo junk.
I bought the ECU from him and it works just fine.

Hm, that guy has some cheap stuff! The description looks good, but the pic is not from a caponord etv 1000 dashboard by the looks of it?

Ok, i found a second hand dashboard, albeit with issues as well: it won't boot easily, and it won't shut off:

By the looks of it, it seems that this is strictly related to the regulator circuit, more specifically the capacitors. Only measuring will tell

    Any measuring done so far?

    Cheers,

    Hi

A friend of mine replaced all capacitors and checked for broken vias (none found). Now the 2nd dashboard works like a charm (just rode on it for the first time)
