    1400cc modification thread

So the 1400cc motors have been out for a few years now and it seems that other than occasional set of pipes very few owners have really experimented at all with the Guzzi 1400cc power plant used in the California 1400, Touring, Audauce, MGX-21, Eldorado etc. I have had a couple of MGX's up on the dyno to play with recently. These graphs are no serious mods, dead stock, with pipes and with pipes and inlet snorkels removed. Obviously the real potential in the relatively short stroke motor is in the mapping and killing the high rpm ride by wire throttle back.

Unlike most of my tests this bike was run in 4th gear to avoid the 118 mph speed limiter that rears its ugly head in 5th and 6th gears, that said since it is a steady state dyno there is no power difference between the gears.

If its this easy to make this sort of gains, I am very interested to see what can be done with full access to the mapping and RBW control. The 1400cc motors are the same stroke as the 1200cc motors so they are totally safe to 8k rpm minimum. I suspect there is some actual impressive power waiting inside to be untapped.

Yes!!! Been waiting for this! subscribed! I know there has been some work to crack the 7SM ECU going on else where but I am too dumb to download the new map.

We're not too different there lol. The biggie is going to be getting rid of the artificially low rev limiter IF power can be found to peak the top end rpm a bit more. In the RBW mapping it sure looks to me like artificial power restrictions start pretty low in rev range and are really throttled back on power up top.

While more ponies would certainly be welcome, removing the dam toggling on engine braking i will happily pay for. For someone who has not experienced this, just imagine running your favorite corners in 4th gear at a good clip. Using engine braking to set up for the next corner it suddenly goes into a state similar to pulling in the clutch then releases it again. This is a constant at 2750 rpm so you either keep it higher up in the rev range or go faster lol. Probably an emission related thing that holds the throttle open, it is distraction to an otherwise sweet motor.

Engine braking manipulation is definitely possible and the ECU definitely does manipulate the engine braking though not really for emissions reasons as much as one might expect. The computer just leaves the throttle open a bit on closed throttle decel without injecting fuel to reduce the pumping losses associated with pulling a vacuum across the throttle plate. I have never really noticed this when riding the 1400's but it may be mode specific like it is on the Aprilia sport bikes. Does yours do this in both Touring and Sport modes?

2016 Audace, all stock at this point. Tried Touring and Sport with no difference. Coming off a 2 valve Griso this was a disappointment but not enough to give up on it. While stupid expensive to live here, we are blessed with incredible roads in Northern California that can use every cc of these motors.

Ahhh, just found this. Cereal, other impressions of the Audace please? They're a neat bike me thinks.

I am starting to develop a serious Jones for that MGX-21. Especially at the awesome prices for the current model. Got a few months-long all expense paid adventure courtesy of Uncle Sam coming up, but when I get back I think it is going to be new motorcycle time. Glad to see some performance enhancement going on with the Motor. Hopefully will be all dialed in by the time I get back!

I really need to dive into GuzziDiag/TuneECU/OFT and a few other systems for reading and writing maps deeper. The days of being able to fix just about anything with a Power Commander are pretty much over.

There is a 7SM map on GuzziDiag right now, but with a warning if not done with right ECU version it will brick it. This has been reason enough for me to wait until the educated have made it more idiot proof (raises hand).

Yup, Mark has one running in our mate's Audace BUT as stated if the wrong software version is used it will kill the ECU. Apparently it is recoverable but isn't easy. I wasn't aware this had been made public knowledge yet.

There is a LOT of work afoot with the 7SM at the moment but this is not my area of expertise so I'll leave it up to others to communicate their findings when they see fit.

Certainly, as Micah says, at least since the W5AM a Power Commander has NOT been the answer to a maidens prayer that many people think they are. Luckily that unit, (The W5AM) is now pretty much an open book as far as tuning is concerned as long as you find someone who knows what they're doing. Many still apply the old and erroneous maxim that all you need to do is add more fuel. Nothing could be further from the truth.

7SM, W5AM - sounds like AM radio stations.

7SM is used in a few Piaggio RBW machines, same hardware found on many V4's actually. If anyone has any 7SM Cali 1400 files I'd be curious to see them without risking bricking a showroom ecu.
