Best options for a new rear shock.

What are the best options for buying a new rear shock for my 2000 Mille? The stock Sachs unit had been pretty well cooked by the rear exhaust header after 40,000 miles. Ohlins only lists shocks for the 04-09 RSVR and the RSV4. Can I use an 04-09 unit with the 04-09 link plates on my bike? I understand the throw on the 04-09 shock is shorter than the earlier ones. Will the link plates and ride height adjuster be enough to compensate? Will I need a new dog bone too? Or should I just buy a Penske double clicker shock? I really like the looks of the Ohlins better but my first priority is that it works properly.

    Dan,

Hardracing has the AP841 listed as available. This is for 01-03 Mille and 02-05 Tuono. Listed as RSV Mille / Tuono 02-04. This will work on your bike but will require the 01-03 linkage. The later linkage is better anyway. It increases the required stroke length and reduces required spring rate compared to your stock linkage.

Hmmm for about the same price as that AP841 I could pick up a Penske 8987 Triple clicker with remote reservoir...

Ohlins is good stuff if you buy the good Ohlins. Every Ohlins shock I've had to deal with has needed some valving. Penske not so.

Looks like Penske will be my most cost effective route with the least fiddling around. Any recommendations on the best place to buy one?
