Thought about all your comments, just been into the workshop again, pulled the alternator connection apart, just to check it. Found that the centre pick-up was just a few mm short of the other two. Pushed the centre wire up a bit to level them all out, reconnected the two halves of the socket. Started the motor, voltage now 14.05v on tick-over, 14.5v at 4000rpm. Does this sound more like it.

Thats spot on regards voltage, glad to hear your speedo is ok now and those spacers have a habit of dropping out of the large oval piece of rubber, i put a spot of superglue on mine to stop them falling out. Steve P.S. youve done the brown connector at the regulator end but have you done the other one to the right hand side of the cylinders ?

Its down on the right hand side of the cylinders and is a bugger to get at, tank of job and its basicaly the other end of the yellow leads that you've just done and as TTC says make sure you do the white one at the rectifier as well cos they all go into meltdown ounce the crimped connections start corroding and go high resistance. Steve
Have a look at the link below and post 24 will give you an idea what happens and where the connector is . Steve

Yes I've done the white one, replaced that with a Delphi. I'll have a look for the other one tomorrow.

I had difficulty with this connector as it was buried and couldnt for the life of me understand how folk were able to conduct finger ballet to remove the crimped spades from this brown connector, solder and reinsert.
Luigi seems to allow more wire on some looms than other id imagine.

I disconnted said connector and pulled it gently back out by the gene casing. I cut the connector off and soldered on some 'suitable' wire with extra length and then resoldered that. I think it was Grumpy (with his very keen electricial orientated brain) that suggested i should have gone the whole hog and ran the wires all the way to the bloody rec/reg, thats smart do it.
This is on the list still for me.
    Either way shes working fine.
Seeing as the tank is coming off have you stock quick release fuel couplings? If so they will need changing out as they are 50 50 likely to snap whener you disconnect em. Petrol shower time!

Does this look like the correct reg/rectifier? Seems to be right but I dont want to commit until I'm sure its the right bit of kit.
