    Intermittent speedo

I just returned from a 4,000 mile trip down south. The Futura was great, other than wearing out a brand new Metzeler Z6 rear tire in 3,500 miles and needing to replace a headlight bulb. We did run in heavy rain for three days and that's when the speedometer started to act out...intermittently it would drop to zero, sometimes stay there and sometimes start working again (I lost 50 miles on one tank of gas to speedo [and odometer] not working). I thought it was moisture related, but yesterday it worked pretty well in the rain all day. I did a search and found few posts about the speedo cutting out. Does anyone have any info? I think the sensor is okay...would moisture bother it? I did clean and treat (w/Stabilant) the connection by the tank last winter...any other places to look for weak connections?

I was VERY happy my coil waterproofing last winter seemed to work fine...no EFI lights and she ran strong through the rain (unlike last year's trip)! I'll post some pix when I get a chance to look at them.

If everything else on the dash is working well, I'd start with the sensor.

I would start looking for a replacement dash...

Had your problem, first very intermittently and then more and more.

Did troubleshooting of sensor and wiring and no faults.

Changed dash and it was cured.

Probably a bad solder somewhere on the board but to find it

Yikes...I certainly don't want to change the dash!! I'll try cleaning the sensor first and keep my fingers crossed! Thanks, guys.

Mine died too this weekend. But only the speedo. The odo gives correct mileage. The speedo needle randomly turns all directions.
All of this started after i opened the dash for removing the white dust/powder that came out of the speedo needles hole. First thought was the needle had come loose from its axle but nope.
    Anyone with some good advice?

    Intermittent speedo - Update

Yesterday, while the rear wheel was off getting a new sneaker (Pirelli Angel ST), I removed and cleaned the sensor. That seemed to fix the intermittent speedo problem. I went for a 100 mile loop today to scrub the new tire, and the speedo never wavered!

Not a big fan of stupid questions but since I've been searching the forum/workshop manual and can't find which one it's, could someone let me know where is the speed sensor?!? I must be going nuts...

well, not in that pict. If you look at the back of the hub, there's a wire that runs over the back end of the chain guard and into the the center of the hub. this is the actual sensor. There's one screw/bolt holding it in to the casting. It just pulls out iirc.

what the sensor sees is a ring built into the inner seal of the king bearing that we've been talkin about.

I have a speedo that works good (well, about 3-5mph low) when its cooler and when I ride home in the hotter part of the day it reads about half the actual speed. Pulled the sensor and it was super greasy and covered in thick grease. I hope cleaning it good helps behave and perform as intended.
