Sprag Clutch - Freewheel - Starter Clutch

After a couple months having ocasionaly problems with the sprag clutch from:
    - starter turns but not the engine
    - starter would not disengage after engine was running
    - crushing noises for a short while after start or just during running
I did lots of research on this part and here is the conclusion.

The BMW F650 Funduro (199?-1999) has the same problem as the Pegaso 650 199?-2004. The sprag clutch, freewheel or Freilauf in German or starter clutch (all the same part) fails often between 25000-30000km.

The sprag clutch is part of the rotax engine and is the same in both bikes.

If you have the symptoms above, do not wait, get the parts and change the starter clutch. Prolonging the inevidable will cuse severe damage on two connecting parts and result in a much higher reapir bill.

If you bring it to an Aprilia dealer he will charge you in tha are of 300-350€ just for the sprag clutch (source: several forums and own price check).
The labor will be between 50-100€
Most likely the dealer will want to replace the other 2 parts also even if they are just slightly damaged and could easily repaired (smoothen the scratched surface)

To do it yourself, you need a special extractor tool for the flywheel. Most likely Aprilia will not sell you that tool, but you might be able to find it in bike tool shops.

And now comes the part what took rally long to figure out and get the right part numbers.

GO TO BMW AND ASK FOR:
12 11 2 343 296 the sprag clutch (I heared prices around 80€, I had to pay 104€ plus tax but that is the price on a small island and beats the 350€ the Aprilia dealer wanted)
125 510 is the Extractor tool and BMW sells that gladly for 13€
and while you are there you might want to get an oilfilter and do an oilchange since you open the engine anyhow.
11 41 2 343 118 would be the number for the oilfilter and it was 11€

On what motorcycle will you be doing this repair? Will the BMW extractor tool work for a 2002 rsv mille? I've got the same problem going on with my bike.

The Mille Sprag clutch is the same as the Ducati's - search on the Falco section, someone posted the part numbers there. less than half the cost from Aprilia.

Question husqvarna T610 fits pegaso 95 (at least)

I own a peg 95 (carb model, upside down forks) had the same prob. Found out that the first spare of the starter clutch (circular object up left on the above foto) is the same as Husqvarna's T610 moto. I bought it in Greece for 110 euros I think, fits great. But have in mind that it's half the job done, as a year later it sounds a little strange again, feels like I m gonna need to change all the parts after all. Still workin though... Just have that in mind. I can't say for sure it fits peg's models after 1995...

This is why you hear the noise, the not round rollers are getting grinded round

(in the box: this is how the rollers should look like)

an so easy you drop a new freewheel in.
(You need lots to tools and no one mentioned that there is a special screw to fix the crankshaft at TDC and you realy need lots of heat on the center screw after you got the 30mm nut of with the air preasure screw hammer thingy. And if you are lucky the hub will come loose eventualy after a long time with lots of swearing. I had an offer for around 50€ to have it done in a bike shop, but I wated to see for my self how bad it was. next time I take the offer because it was an ordeal to get the hub off.)

... and this will also be one of my last posts here, since the Pegaso is already been replaced with the Malaguti Spidermax what is so much more fun to ride.
I had my Pegaso for 6 months an 6000km but it was hard work to have fun with her 2 up.

    Hey!
I also same things in my bike.
Is it really possible that BMW parts fits to Pegaso? I am asking this because I am ordering those parts right now.

My Pegaso is 1998. Does those part codes fit to my bike?

Hey I'm currently having the same problem with my Aprilia Pegaso 650 2003. Took it in to a repair guy and he wants to replace the sprag clutch and the two connecting parts which are only slightly damaged. He quoted the price for all three parts at 750-1000 Euro!!! Is the above BMW part number code suitable for my 2003? Also would you be able to get me the codes for the other two connecting parts? It would be greatly appreciated. I'm kind of new at all this. Thanks in advance for any replys!

The first part can be bought by BMW. The other ones are repairable. You need a machine-shop...

I didn't swear enough, nor did I use too much heat, but hotter than comfortably (magnets don't like too much heat). Needless to say, The rotor/sprag did not come off The only misshap was that I stripped the inner threads of the puller tool. I failed but the bike is no worse than before, and there still is the option to take her to a shop as a last resort .

Just wanted to say that this is not the easiest task...
Ex 1998 Pegaso (cube), bought at 24520, sold at 80211 km
Don't take my word for anything until you get a second opinion! This is the Internet you know...

how much time it takes to change Starter Clutch? (So that I know what would be reasonable price to pay for the job/hours in near bike shop, assuming that hourly rates differ here and there...)
