After a couple months having ocasionaly problems with the sprag clutch from:
- starter turns but not the engine
- starter would not disengage after engine was running
- crushing noises for a short while after start or just during running
I did lots of research on this part and here is the conclusion.
The BMW F650 Funduro (199?-1999) has the same problem as the Pegaso 650 199?-2004. The sprag clutch, freewheel or Freilauf in German or starter clutch (all the same part) fails often between 25000-30000km.
The sprag clutch is part of the rotax engine and is the same in both bikes.
If you have the symptoms above, do not wait, get the parts and change the starter clutch. Prolonging the inevidable will cuse severe damage on two connecting parts and result in a much higher reapir bill.
If you bring it to an Aprilia dealer he will charge you in tha are of 300-350€ just for the sprag clutch (source: several forums and own price check).
The labor will be between 50-100€
Most likely the dealer will want to replace the other 2 parts also even if they are just slightly damaged and could easily repaired (smoothen the scratched surface)
To do it yourself, you need a special extractor tool for the flywheel. Most likely Aprilia will not sell you that tool, but you might be able to find it in bike tool shops.
And now comes the part what took rally long to figure out and get the right part numbers.
GO TO BMW AND ASK FOR:
12 11 2 343 296 the sprag clutch (I heared prices around 80€, I had to pay 104€ plus tax but that is the price on a small island and beats the 350€ the Aprilia dealer wanted)
125 510 is the Extractor tool and BMW sells that gladly for 13€
and while you are there you might want to get an oilfilter and do an oilchange since you open the engine anyhow.
11 41 2 343 118 would be the number for the oilfilter and it was 11€

The only misshap was that I stripped the inner threads of the puller tool. I failed but the bike is no worse than before, and there still is the option to take her to a shop as a last resort
