CA Air Resources Board vs. Dynojet

This may be of interest to those considering Power Commanders.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced recently that it
concluded an investigation against Dynojet Research, Inc. At issue was
the company's "Power Commander" that can be used to alter the air-fuel
mixture and engine timing of on- and off-road motorcycles. CARB said
that the installation of these devices would adversely affect the
emissions control systems of vehicles that were certified by the
original equipment manufacturers to comply with the agency's emissions
standards. Dynojet has now certified a California version of the "Power
Commander" and has agreed to pay $1,000,000 in penalties to the
    California Air Pollution Control Fund.

    Thumbs down

Need more info. Was dynojet required to rework the PC so that it could not be tuned to violate CARB standards or was it just a "$hakedown".

The article, limited as it was, did hint that Dynojet will have a California Power Commander. My guess is it will be quite limited in control, and may primarily rework timing, not fuel.

I'm sure sales of regular PCs to Cali (out of state) will go up. I wonder if it will come down to some kind of equipment inspection (emissions stickers etc)

There's a "street" version of the Power Commander out already. How many people actually going to buy those is another story. As long as my bikes don't get smog tested, I don't give a shit.

    CARBoard

CARB is as useless as the TSA

But CARB does pay these Gov. employees big bucks, and FULL retirement including FULL med. benefits. The gigantic new office buildings would make you sick. CARB built NEW offices, at a time when they could have just rented space in empty offices.

CARB is all powerful, just like the TSA there is almost no oversight. Your tax $ at work, Gov. running away with your $.

I am sorry to hear about DynoJet and the penalty, but they were thumbing their nose at CARB. (As I do with my "mods").

Jesse James/West Coast Choppers got fined this last year (maybe 2 years ago?) for building/selling a bunch of choppers that didn't meet the regs.

    found this....

California air regulators slapped Jesse James with a monster fine for building 50 custom bikes that didn't have state certified emissions equipment. The LA Times says the $271,250 fine applies to bikes built at West Coast Choppers between 1998 and 2005. Inspectors from the Air Resources Board found the vehicles didn't have proper smog equipment on the exhaust or intake systems and they could spit out 10 times the amount of hydrocarbons allowed by state law. Regulators say James was not targeted and they have brought action against 20 other customizers. But we must give Jesse his due: the burger joint next to his shop has solar panels (James co-owns the shop). James was the host of the popular Discovery Channel show Monster Garage. The last episode aired last year.
    and JJ response....

" I think its pretty suspicious that a organization (CARB)that runs
under the premise of "Clean Air" is doing press releases on the cash
settlements they are extracting from California Buisness'. If there
intententions were really focused on the environment they surely would
have taken my offer to make All of the "Non-Complient" Motorcycles meet
Federal EPA standards. They did not accept my offer and stated that they
were only interested in the cash settlement.
West Coast Choppers Motorcycles have been tested to be low emitions
Vehicles and will always comply with Federal safety and Emitions
standards. West Coast Choppers is on the leading edge in Hydrogen
Technology with Development of a Zero emitions hydrogen powered Land Speed car capable of 250mph . West Coast Choppers has also pioneered the worlds first Green Fast food restaraunt Cisco Burger that opened in May 2006.
We hope that paying this money will bring to light that California has
a Flawed system when it comes to its Clean Air Agencys and the policies
    and practices they use.

if CARB chose not to take JJ up on his offer...sounds like there's some shenanigans going on....

THe only thing I can think of is that a CARB approved PC will have limits set on how much you can control the mixture and timimg. That is, maybe it will not allow say more than a 30 percent increase in fuel for a specific rpm.

But I'm sure hackers will easily overcome the programming of that limit amynow. Its probably stored in EE memory and if you dig at it you gain access.

Perhaps a CARB board member needed some new furniture for the house or buy some bit of "sparkly" for the girlfriend?

CARB is a political organization first; everything else is subservient to that.
