View Full Version : MV Agusta F4 1000cc...what a ride!

We finally got an MV Agusta F4 1000cc in for tuning on the dyno...OMG, what a fun ride. It is a 4 cylinder 916, in every way imaginable. The bike is stinking fast on the street, I have not managed to exceed 8,500rpm and it is scary.

Here is the dyno file comparing a stock Aprilia RSVR 2004, the same bike with pipes, airkit and mapping and the dead stock MV F4 1000...not bad huh?

I really like this bike...it is not special in the same was a 999r F05 but still more bike than I will ever be a rider. I will post more info and pics after i am done tuning the beast.

that has to be one of the coolest looking and performing bikes around. that curve just keeps on climbing, don't it? :lover:

The F4 is a distinctive looking bike and an overall excellent bike. Nonetheless, I won't spend any money on an I-4, and I don't care if it's a rice burner or a pasta burner.

Here are the before and after dyno graphs with nothing other than the addition of the PCIIIusb and many hours on the dyno and 8 gallons of gas. This bike is extremely strong, making gonzo power from as low as 6,500 rpm. The way the MV pulls is very much like a much torquier version of the ZX10R Kawasaki. They are about even on peak horsepower but the way the MV makes its power is much more aggressive, almost brutal in delivery.

Like many late model bikes the MV apparently has a gear position sensor which does neuter the power a small amount in the lower gears but to no where near the extreme that suzuki kills power in the low gears.

My overall impression of the MV is that for a street bike it is not that good. The riding position is beyond "dedicated" and the extreme power of the motor makes a large collection of traffic tickets likely. The MV encourages you to go fast...it is almost like it demands you to go fast. The overall build quality is pretty high, not quite to the level you might expect in a bike of this price but overall very good. It is basically a 4-cylinder 916 with many of the same idiosyncracies like the fact that the bike is held together with little well-nuts all over the place that will drive you mad over time. In town riding sees the temp guage hovering in the 220F range since the fairing completely blocks airflow from the radiator at lower speeds...trapping a large amount of heat inside the fairing. For my dyno sessions I actually had to remove the mid fairings just to keep the engine inoperating temp range even with our 135mph large volume high pressure fans. The stock exhaust has a catalyst in it which further heats the area near you ass....a la 916/996/998.

Surprisingly to me the MV still uses large remote mount dual output coils. I really expected to see nice little lightweight coil on cap units resting on top of the spark plugs. Despite some of this "old school" tech stuff the motor really makes steam and the chassis is beyond compare feeling to me much better than a new R1, GSXR or ZX10R. The brakes are lacking in initial bite, not surprising since they too are old school non-radial nissin calipers. Once you really get into the brakes they offer fine outright power but without the "connected" feel that i have become accustomed to on modern Italian bikes like the RSVR's and 999's.

The MV really is a miracle of packaging without an inch of free space to be found about anywhere under the beautiful sculpted fairing and tail panels. Even finding an appropriate place to mount the Power Commander on the Agusta was a difficult propostion. It got so hot just sitting in the tool tray that the bottom of the PC unit melted away. After replaceing the base plate of the PCIIIusb I moved it onto the inner tail section next to one of the rear air extractor vents for better cooling.

Asthetically speaking the MV is really without a peer. The way the body flows around bulging mechanicals looks great. The exhaust is a little on the showy side and way too quiet for my tastes in stock form. Overall I have to say that the MV is the best looking bike on the market. I hope in the future generations of the F4/F5 they address a few of the issues mentioned above which keep the MV from absolute perfection.

Maybe the 1000cc motor makes a difference but the brakes were pure shite on my 750cc and on the 1000cc "Ago" I tried. The bikes were also heavy as all heck and not very good at speeds less than 80mph. Sold mine for my 2001 Mille R. No regrets. (Plus I got some leftover change for shoes, hats and whores)

Nice looking ride! You are some lucky bastard getting to ride that thing and even get paid to do so! :lover:

However, apart from the beauty of the fully clad version, I would much prefer the Brutale in my stable - an everyday MV. At least it gets ridden - I very frequently see MV Brutales around here (they seem to breed somewhere), but only rarely does a low-mile F4 come across my sight (or was that lightspeed rocket Whhhosssshhh on the Autobahn recently an F4? :D )

http://www.moto-net.com/images/mondial_2003/mv_brutale_02.jpg

About those exhausts: The last F4 I saw seemed very loud in the OEM EU version - much louder than any Japs, Brit or German bikes when new. Propably measured according to Italian dB "interpretations" (in real life, Ferraris also seem louder stock than allowed by the EU - matter of Italian national pride!). I was quite amazed how noisy they managed to homologate that beast - maybe MV Agusta USA couldn't find an Italo-American DOT / EPA inspector to accept a bribe? ;)

Here's my ugly MV:

75824

It still looks this ugly after 2 years. But the tires are worn to the edges, losing that new luster that was evident in this shot taken the day I picked it up. I hadn't been on a modern 1000 up till' I bought this. It really is ridiculously fast, and I'm a scared little bitch everytime I try to hold the throttle to the stop for any substantive length of time.

Yeah, I know, here come the volunteers......

DBG, ha ha I wouldn't ever call myself a phenom, but yes I used to play football. I play (if you call it that) basketball for fun. I had the stock rims and traded those for Magnesium wheels then went to CF and haven't looked back. I, by no stretch have money to burn, I just like what I like. I'm 6' 200lbs, right now. My plan is to keep the height, but lose some lbs. Wish me luck...

BTW, very nice taste in the Blue/Silver combo.
