I was watching 60 Minutes last night and they had a segment on NASCAR.

What was interesting was a bit about NASCAR has already started building a new race track in Staten Island, NY?!?!

Anyone hear anything about this? Perhaps the infield could be carved up a bit for a good motorcycle roadrace course....

It's going to be a 3/4 mile track that will look like Richmond. Given that the lat PPIR track was a 1 mile and was a POS for a road race track, Phoenix is a 1 mile and that road course sucks, I hate to see what something inside the SI track would look like. Maybe OK for a SuperMotard track.

I'm about 1/2 hour North of NYC. Either way it will still be a ride for me, but it looks to be a nicer track than Poconos. I'd like to do the Beaver Run some day too.

I thought Beaverun was kinda a fishbowl...at least the one course that Team Promotion was running a few weekends back. I'd imagine that there's a fixed cost no matter what size track you build in term of bullsh_t noise pollution, environmental activists problems, permits, zoning hearings, architectural/design costs. Why not just build a huge-ass track instead of fishbowls? Barber comes to mind.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME :D

ditto on that...
NASCAR bought the property and proposed some plans. There's no way you'd fit half the typical 100,000 people in there with vitually no parking or places to park RVs. I guess the figure no right minded southern'er is going to travel to Staten Island for a NASCAR race.
As far as we're concerned, any road course in there would be very limited.

NJ Motorsports Park looks great!
Here's another one proposed on Long Island (http://www.topgunse.com/current_project.htm)

What about this one?

If only these tracks would be built. I would be in heaven because all of them would be within 2 hours from where I am and the one in Staten Island is probably 20 minutes without traffic.
I also just looked at Rausch Creek Raceway and it looks like its operational but why there never a motorcycle club track days?

Rausch Creek appears to be on "hold"
the last "news" item was from Sept 18, 2003

Falcolion,
I agree with you... I would be at the track a lot more if the tracks were closer. 5-6hrs each way for Summit Point last weekend. Had a great time but the commute sucks.

Last time I went to Summit Point JC it took me 4.5 hours to get there (flying at around 90 mph) and about 6.5-7 hours back in traffic :pissed: The track was fun but getting up at 3:30 am to go there is not. Hopefully all these track in the neighborhood become reality :plus:

I think that Rausch Creek was mired by environmental issues which prolly bankrupted the first partnership that tried to make a go of it. We need a good track desperately in the tri-state area NJ/NY/PA.

Gimme one big lottery payout and I'll build the damn thing. We definitely need more tracks. The sport is ever growing in popularity and we need some place to ride. It's much more approachable and affordable than racin' cages and more interesting tha Asscar.

The more of us that get our need for speed taken care of on the track versus the road the better we'll all be.
