Im new to bike's, last bike i had was a little mx80 when i was about 15.
Ive always wanted an Aprilia rs125 but came across this RS50 and bought it.

The fairings are Scratched abit down one side where some ones either slipped off or dropped it.
There is also abit of rust here and there but looks more to be surface.

Are these scratches repairable, like filling them in sanding then spraying ?
Whats the best spray paint to use on fairings ?
As you can tell im new to all this, but thought it could keep me busy through the winter.
Still not to sure what colour to go or if it would be easier to by new fairings.

Thanks

Rich

Hi Rich,
Nice single swing arm RS you have there, it has potential.
Yes, those fairings are well abused. Most of the scratching is repairable, no problem. Ever used fibre glass before?

How is the engine on the bike? Have you opened it up yet?

I've only used fiber glass, doing flat roofs. smells like cat piss.
not to sure how id use it on scratches, any tips.

Other than me killing the battery off more.
I charged it last night and starts first time. and sounds as good as a 50 can i guess.
Im missing a part of one fairing where the indicator is, they hard to get ?

The bike cost me 300 which i thought was a bargain specially for its shape.
Not to keen on.the rounded arse end on the newer shaped ones.

Fibre glass for the crack in the nose cone. For the side fairings ; Sanding, filling, priming, rubbing down, priming, paint, rub down, paint....Untill smooth. Takes a while.

Best thing you can do is fit a Cast Iron 70cc kit, Tuned expansion chamber and a decent carb (dellorto 19-21mm). Sounds and goes like a difference animal then and will keep up with 125 4 strokes no worries.

I like all the early RS's, my favourites are the 99-05 though, hence why I have one. Its all personal though...

Fitting mesh to the airvents is a easy to do upgrade that makes it look a lot better, and AF1-50 wheels look way cooler than the 3 spoke wheels of the RS50 IMO but hard to get.

I like the idea of mesh. What's best paint/primer to use filler etc

I have used Plasticoat paint (think that is what it is called?) in the past and It has been brilliant for paining side panels. The tank needs to withstand Petrol.

I like these early RS's in bright red, with a few white 'Aprilia' stickers. I like plain and simple personally.

Or you could go with the Original colour scheme, if you can find a sticker set on ebay.

Yellow/Black
Red/Black

Plenty of imitation sticker sets for these bikes.

Match the Mesh to the paintscheme.

Ive brought better condition bikes for 200 a lot better (that inly needed a piston) I would say your in mint condition with all original parts and paint about 700 to 900 in okay condition with none original paint and parts 400 to 700

Its taxed till next month and mot'd till march.
only parts i think that are not original will be the two side fairings which ive repaired and sprayed back to black.
be nice bit of profit in it then :] cool.
Are they hard or easy to sell ?

Cheers

Black 1997

There not worth much once there no longer fully Original, from than it just depents on how good you make it look.

RS50 1999>2005 is still the most valuable, price doesnt drop on them nearly as much as on the 2006 and onwards, but the earlier bikes also do ok on the second hand market, but the AF1-50 (if Original) models are worth more than the RS50's up to 1998.

No pre 2005 RS is a piece of crap!

Zav

So your bike then dan ???????????? I'm sure pre 2005 means you think your bikes crap ??????? Correct me if I'm wrong

As th 87 and so on weigh more, slower acceleration (less gears so longer ratios means slower but keeps same top speed), hard to get parts for, rust a lot Easyer than any other model, and all of them have been trashed

But personally now I've finally got rid of most of my rs I can say that dan your year rs is the best for quality and use ability, the new shapes are too short, to heavy, too fat, very unreliable for the electrics and break a hell of a lot easier than any other year

I disagree with zav the 1997 -1998 are cool and way harder to find, as for parts the only issue you will have is the side air scoops . with a little work you can probably figure out a way to use the newer fairing on your bike. I believe I looked up the weight on the 1997-98 was 199lbs and 99-2005 196lbs . The rest of the bike is about the same from what I have seen and I have cross referenced a lot of parts from the new 99-2005 that fit the 97-98. I don't know how easy it is to find one of these in the UK but in the US any rs50 is a hard to find item and the parts are just as hard to get ther is only one place that sells them in state and shipping from over seas is a killer. If you live In the US and get your hands on one keep it they are getting harder to find .

AF1 50 Futura 1991/1992 model and the AF1 50 Europa (naked version)are even cooler bikes than the RS50 1993 to 1998, much rarer and better looking IMO, basicly all AF1 50's and RS50's from 1989 till 1999 use the type of frame and swingarm.

And its 249lbs dry weight for the 1997/1998 model, v.s. 196lbs dry weight for the 1999/2005 model, big difrence...
