I recently bought a used factory bellypan and it had the same problem.

Caused by petrol or petrol fumes from the fuel tank breather pipe

yup agreed. i have an email into ed @ AF1 don't know of there's anything that can be done.

Ooh... that is indeed not good. Fumes alone can do that? I am surprised. Guess I'd better check my ape.

I am happy to report that there is indeed something that can be done.

Ride the bike and enjoy it. Don't look at or think about this tiny flaw any more and its power over you will diminish over time.

Fit a new decal and clearcoat it for a permanent fix.

This post makes me sad. I think we picked up our bikes at almost the same time. I managed to get to enough miles on it to do the first service and then had to put it away for the winter. Now its March and you have been out enjoying yours and mine is still tucked away in the garage. Damn winter.

Yup...I lost 3, then I realised that the front wheel was out of balance....wayyyyyy out of balance.
Since balancing, I've had no probs.

Those screws are expensive little bastards....I ended up buying 6 of ebay for about 5 (bargain!)

i'm mean these things haven't left me stranded. but if i had paid $17k vs what i bought it for, that would be unacceptable.

mon. after 3 days w/o being started, it took 4 tries to get her fired up.......and it was the ignition/fueling not the battery.

yeah yeah yeah character.

and yes this bike is a barrel of monkeys.

Did you verify that all bolts were properly torqued to begin with? I've bought brand new bikes that had bolts that weren't even finger tight...

Also, Blue Loctite is an inexpensive way to keep things in place...

Racer X

gonna have to go do that, though there is yellow marks on "everything" meaning it's been checked, guess there needs to be more.

Vibration issues with all sorts of bikes show up on the dyno too. The last step of every dyno test or tuning session is to sweep the floor looking for ll the bolts that have set themselves free of bondage! That paint/decal blem is definitely caused by fumes and condensed droplets of fuel coming out of the breather hoses for the tank. One is the overfill/overflow line for when you accidentally overtop the gas tank at the filling station. Of the 400 or so available blends of gasoline sold here in the USA some are VERY caustic. Like brake fluid I have seen gas that can literally dissolve clear paint in minutes, not race gas either but, pump fuels.

I have similar issues on my multilayer painted BMW car around the fuel filler.

Ya know, as much as I like these apes, I wouldn't for one moment think of relying on one for daily transportation. As a weekend joy ride though, I love the crap out of mine.

As for threads, most of mine have either antiseize or thread locker. Few of them stay dry after I R&R them.

well i do have 2 cars and a bike backup

but i do think they should start and fire up EVERY time (esp. if i ride 5 days out of 7) and not have bolts falling out. esp w/ 4 mos and 3000mi

I got an 07.5 tuono with 45,000 miles on it has started every time except once when the stator failed, and I have lost a heat shield and 2 bolts. It's a V twin it's going to vibrate things loose, but overall it's been a great reliable bike. as good as any of my many jap bikes. Just the damn guages keep fogging up and I live in California

only rode mon. last week, as i was carting my neighbor everyday to/from work, he also work at the same co. he had eye surgury, so he wasn't supposed to drive.

anyways, started the bike up sat. , just to warm her up a lil. started fine

this morn. was colder then sat. 60's, i didnt think it was going to start at all. finally on the 5-6th try it lit up.

smelled gas too, like i flooded the carbs (back in the day)

Starting to sound like no spark. Which will explain the gas smell. Unburnt mixture getting dump out the exhaust since there is no spark to light it. Can't imagine the humidity having to do with it, since it's all solid state ignition these day, not like points and condensor in the old days.

Doesn't matter if it's hot or cold temp wise.

RacerX I had a similar issue. The bike would take a few tries to get started. I replaced the battery with a brand new one and it has not happened since then. I don't recall smelling unburnt gas though.

even though this bike is only 3 mos. old, it's realitically nearly 3 yrs old, as is the battery.

Was going out for a quick night ride and the kickstand light wouldn't go out. Looked down and saw the bolt holding the switch on had backed completed out. I'm lucky it didn't fall off during a ride. Easy enough to tightened it down - blue locktite the threads while I was at it.

Now I know why I felt the engine miss-firing occasionally. The switch was working itself loose and was cutting out the engine very briefly.

I've got to go check every nut and bolt now.

dang

i've just started holding the start button down and powering thru the start, once in a while it'll take 1-2 times.

i'm from the old skool where you hold the start button as short as possbile, but not w/ this bike

Racer X, you might wanna check your battery. '09's and '10s may have sat in the warehouse for 2-3 years. I know when I switched to the Shorai battery, it made a difference in how well the bike started. I'm sure it'll be even better after I do the brown connector mod.

Hamfisting the starter button is what kills the sprag gear over time.

I'm gonna be out of town this weekend. I'll check with you next week. Yes, I've got sets of 50-micron pure-gold-plated zero-loss connectors that are good for 50A continuous and 100A peak, plus others that can take even higher amps, just in case. I ordered plenty for both of ours, don't worry.
