View Full Version : Double bubble screen, lacquered carbon first impressions.

Spent the morning working on the bike and refitting the original carbon panels after having them clear lacquered at the paint shop.

I have to admit IMPO this is the way to do, the weave is really distinctive and long term no need to worry about scatching and "discoloration".

The good news was that the carbon is sealed and did not soak up the laquer (unlike the set of carbon Akra hangers which are like a sponge and still with the painters for more work, hence the SP style hangers made by Steve Perkins and available from his website:D )

The Skidmarx screen makes a heck of a difference when riding, reduces noise and definetly cuts the wind factor, I found I was riding far faster than previously when I looked a the clocks.

I went for their dark tint which is a blue gray. I'd say it will make an improvement to visability of the clocks in bright sunshine.

Still going to order one of the MRA screens as well.

Here are some pics:

I had them mde by Mac from EZGRAPHICS (http://www.ezgraphics.co.uk) who also made the GP graphic for the hugger and the colour IP stickers.

Waiting for some other stuff from him at the moment including a full size lion head for the side fairing.

Wow the carbon bits dont even look like carbon now.Sure is shiney. Like the screen, but it seems a wee bit to tall in the center, almost perfect though.

It looks like the lion logo has some 3d dimention to it. Where, how much? & very cool!! and the bike looooks fabulous.

I have been thinking about putting on a Lion Logo also. Do you have any recommendations about putting the stickers on & anything additional that I need to do to make sure they last.

TIA

Bike is looking damn good :plus:

Thunder regarding the carbon bits what did they use on them. Need to get it done on mine but not much experience regarding carbon fiber bits in this region....would like to know the exact name of the stuff they used and the process if possible. This is definatly the way to go. :burnout:

I know the laquered carbon will not be to everyones tastes, but having seen the Nera at last years UK bike show there was a big contrast between the "stock" carbon from the Factory which was used on it and the rest of the bodywork and tank which was laquered.

I'd seen carbon which over time starts to appear gray with scratches and wear, this way it's protected and can be polished just like the rest of the painted components.

I had the decals made in 3D vinyl to give them some definition, first in black and silver, but they did not look right on the bike IMO, then in grey and gold.

You can find details of them and the hugger graphic here (http://www.ezgraphics.co.uk/bikes/aprilia_acc_04.htm) on Mac's site.

Fittings prety straight forward, make sure you degrease the panel first, as for looking after them I just polish as normal.

They do it in clear as well as a range of colours. I'm going to get an MRA screen in clear when available, I wanted a tinted one for summer use and touring in Spain!

I got them direct from R&G the manufacturers as I'm in the UK, but the site shop has them.

Very high quality and I've used their sliders on my last 2 bikes.

The lacquer is just the stuff that paint shops use on car paint finishes so not hard to find.

Preperation is the same as for car bodwork, degreasing and cleaning before application.

R&G Racing (http://www.rg-racing.com) make the sliders and also the fork and swing arm protectors you can see in the pictures.

I got the screen through a contact with a UK supplier called Demon Tweeks, thye have a website but it would be better to ring him direct as he should be able to give you some discount. His names Neil Smith and his direct number is 0044 1978 663 044 and tell him you were talking to roger from Northern Ireland who recommended the Skidmarx screen to you.

HiXX

I'll get the bike out later and take some close ups.

Don't think it will really give you much of an idea though, just take it from me the carbon now looks deep black and "rich" with plenty of definition. Of coyrse this is just a personal opinion. :D

Eugene

Send me a Private Message with your address and I'll ring him and sort out a quote for delivery.

I think they sell R&G protectors as well so I'll get a price as well.

Also include your email addrss and I'll get him to mail the costs to you, you can then reply if you want to proceed.

Tony

The lowers came via Philip, but I got the rest direct as I'd done some research for them and they owed me a favour.

The SP style hangers are made by Steve Perkins from Nottingham who makes different stuff for Aprilias including an 04 number plate bracket.

The lever went West when the bike rolled off the paddock stand as I was trying to get it set up, have a new one on order,

Let me know when your collecting it, I'll try and get down to meet you.

Steve has a temporary site which you can find here (http://pub99.ezboard.com/fperkysfrm16.showMessage?topicID=1.topic) it has a pic of the nuber plate bracket for the bike and the can hangers, if you want a close up of them fitted let me know, I'm using them while the carbon Akra ones I have ae being lacquered.

Sure thing, dying to give you a buzz again for a chat, just can't seem to get the time lately, is there a particular time of day that suits you? loads of questions to ask so I'm trying to get a time when neither of us will have to rush off!!!!!

Thanks for the site info. What's the side stand improver all about and what are the hangers made of???

Well as for the best time of day to get me that's hard to pin down as it depends on work, I don't have 9 to 5 hours and never know really what my schedules like until a week in advance.

Evenings are generally good, I'm definetly here tonight after 9 if you want to give me a shout.

The side stand improver was made for the previous version of the bike as it sat to vertical on the stock stand. The improver replaced the entire stand mount and changed the angle.

The hangers are made from high grade stainless steel tube and use the stock rubber mounts from the old peg versions.

That's a great looking bike. I was doing a search on re-finishing Carbon Fiber and found this thread. :)

So...you had your carbon bits professionally lacquered? I just tried to refinish mine with a spray can and it turned out blah. Not nearly the depth and polish I was looking for. :bangwall:

Does anybody have any insight as to how best apply lacquer from a spray can and make it look tits? Do I need to polish it after or buff it or something?

Just some personal stuff getting in the way of him enjoying his Factory. He was doing well last I spoke to him. He didn't spray his own carbon, he had it done somewhere local in Ireland. But I saw it in person a while back and it really does look good..not plastic at all, just deep deep carbon weave.

have it professionally done, or buy a real spray gun and use automotive clear that has to be thinned not pre-bought stuff, do a search on my threads about how mine was done
