I have attached two photos in hopes of assisting owners of '04 RSVR, and RSVR Factory models who are unsure if their bike has already had it's swingarm repalced.

The bad swingarms have two rivnuts installed on the inside of the chain side of the swingarm.

The good swingarms have only one. Because of the location of the toe guard bracket it can be difficult to see if the second rivnut is present, but you should be able to tell without any dissassembly.

Gpc111, there is a thread about the entire issue if you do a search but in a nutshell, it's a recall and if you talk to your dealer about replacing it, they will likely order it and install it for you. There is talk of a letter from Aprilia going out to owners but it's been a year since the NHTSB issued the info on the recall and I've not seen a letter. When I asked my local dealer, they said, if you ask to have it replaced, they will do it, if you don't ask, who knows.............mines in and the dealer is waiting for me to drop the bike off.

Thanks for the details.....Are there any other real recalls...i'm reading about the chain, rear shock...Do you know of any of these?

just one question... if the new swing arm only has one hole what does the bottom chain guard bolt up to ? i've looked at my 04 and it has two screw hole's so it something that needs doing so why not it's for free

no, the lower rivnut causes stress fractures to form in the swingarm, resulting in a large crack eminating from the lower rivnut, hence why they removed it, and replaced it with a simple metal brace.

but if you simply stop the hole, it can't be bad, no?
I say that because several only-track bikes have simply no access to any warrantly (damaged swingarms after crashes for instance).
Any way to fix the problem without changing it would be appreciated.

I assume a single welding point to fill the hole won't be enough.

What I would do is to weld a square piece of aluminium about 3 to 5 cm each side.

But to do that, you have to know a man who knows is job (a bad welding could cause more damages than the hole itself).

As I understand it, you provide the VIN and Aprilia checks whether or not the swingarm has been replaced. I don't think it matters whether or not it's a racebike with no warranty. Maybe Steve can confirm?

swingarms......doesnt matter if its a racebike or out of warranty.....its a worldwide recall to replace all of them

its the only recall in the USA on these bikes. The clutch pump, resetting dash (miles go to 0), and rear brake are all service bulletins, and can be updated if you are under warranty and are having problems.

I believe you are DR Thrill and also on the weilding front I can attest to the fact that you want a very certified welder w/lots of aluminuim experience. My first ape was an 01R and like a knuckle head I kust went ahead and ordered a yoshi slip-on (1st non jap bike)

and I didn't check the fit, just popped it on and went riding. Wella couple of days later I noticed that the yosh had been hitting the swinger the whole time. So I had it welded, thankfully he was good at his job because it was a veryhard task, that he couldn't get quite perfect. He said that because the alum was so thin that it just kept drawing in, basiclly creating a convex/concave (whichever is inward) hole or divot. it was a little noticable to me because I knew where to look for it.
