original buttons on front rotor
I am having trouble trying to figure out how to get the buttons apart to clean them. They are the ones that were on the bike when purchased new and they almost look riveted on. If I have to cut them or drill them off what do I replace them with. I dont have a pic of them yet but if you need to see what I am talking about I'll try to post one sometime today but it may be a day or two.

They are not removable except by drilling etc.
Here is an old thread that tells the story: http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/s...hlight=BUTTONS Also, do a search for buttons and there many other threads on this subject. Last edited by kzmille; 03-18-2005 at 09:44 AM. |

There's a good thread, somewhere, on freeing up the buttons. Remove the six bolts which hold the rotors on. Flip it over. Get a broad, flat head screwdriver. Pry up, one at a time, the "petals" which hold the button in place, to about a 30 degree angle. When you've done all petals for each button, the button will spin freely. You've now made your rotors float as they were intended. Get brake cleaner and shoot the dried brake pad dust out of the back of the button. Takes, literally, 45 minutes start to finish. It makes more sense when you look at the buttons with the rotors off the wheel.

I did mine late last season, I swear it made a difference. I could be crazy though, it wouldn't be the first time

just curious if someone could post a pic so I can get an idea of what the buttons should look like after I bend the petals out. And just to make sure, after I do bend them out to clean them should I leave them bent or should I roll them back over?

Leave the springs bent out/loose. They will rattle a little but stay cleaner and float better. Not necessary to bend the springs way out just enough so you can spin the buttons easily. I swear there used to be a thread on here that went into detail on this and had close-up pictures of the springs, screwdriver, etc. I tried every search I could think of and can't find it.

Here are the pics.
Reminds me that I haven't cleaned the buttons yet, just bent them out.
If the quality isn't good enough, I'll email you larger files.Yeah, I couldn't find the thread either. It was a big deal too, at one time. Paul

Rotor buttons
The thread that I think stoneflylama has in mind is titled "Stock front brake rotors made perfect for $0" which was started by griz. I saved it, but I do not know how to find it or give a link to it.

Thats the one. Pics didn't come through but you can look at paulphin2002's pics. The most helpful part for me was to use a sharpened flat head screwdriver and work it around the spring without pulling it out after every little petal. First couple of buttons were a pain until I got the technique down.

So you pry the spring out and clean then then pry the petals out. Well I'd say it dosent matter the order but the spring is inside the the what looks like a washer. If I got that right I should be in good shape.
