When was the last time it was started? How often was the engine run? As great a bike as it may be no motorcycle does well sitting for years at a time.

I think it is much less a matter of "not knowing what they look like" and more a matter of "let's see what yours looks like".
I've been in the market for a Factory for some time now and it is amazing to see what recent pictures say (e.g. bikes advertised as in showroom-like condition, which have been obviously down with cans/fairings and rearsets showing the affects) I'm sure no offense is meant, most just want to feel as comfortable as possible, prior to getting more deeply involved in conversation. Like they say, "a picture says 1K words".
