not to revive an old thread, but does the orange thing need to seal against anything? seems like after you cut out the black "funnel" piece it has nothing to seal against? obviously it doesnt cause a problem since no one has said anything, but im just curious

Edit: I just re checked the orange thing and it does not seal against anything (even if you havent removed anything in the filler it doesnt seal against anything). It doesnt touch against the inner section of the filler. All it does is hold the rubber seal on so dont remove it.

Having done a few of theses now I would suggest not cutting ALL the inner funnel shaped bit out. Leave 5mm or so showing and that will still give a big enough hole to fill easily, but will also give a bit of plastic for the orange thingy to seal/sit against, which may not do fook all, but may help reduce splashes before they get to the rubber seal.

Here is a pic of the one I was cutting last night. It is a 10 min job.

i just gassed up today, everytime i got on the gas, the fuel sprayed into my lap and on my leg. i pulled over and re-closed it, no difference. So the cap comes apart by pulling the orange part downwards? or do you need to pull the screws out of the cap to do it?

    It happened to me

And I smelled like petrol the rest of the day. Unreal. Gas spewing out under acceleration at about 60mph. Ha.

SO I did the fix, but I have a question. I didn't have any washers handy that would fit. What I did do, was put a bigger o ring in. Will this be ok? Could the pressure eventually stretch out that flimsy metal washer or damage the rubber one that is on there? I normally would have gotten a different part, but i didn't want to get leaked on the rest of the afternoon. I suppose I could swap it our relatively easily if need be.

    Any answers appreciated.

APRSV2007fi... No you dont need to remove the allan keys to do the fuel leak fix. Just remove the orange cap and do it. BUT!!!! DO put something over the fuel hole or something you are using WILL drop into the tank...you have been warned!

However its obvious you need to remove the allen keys if you want to open up the filler hole the pressure wont do anything to the other washers.

Grant, the o-ring should work ok.
