Just to be clear:
Never use the ignition key to shut the bike off. Doing so causes the engine to impact 2-3 times after the bike is off, propelling the freewheel. The backlash (I think that's what the datasheet is saying) can inflict substantial damage to the starter as well as the engine. Always use the red kill switch which is located next to the right handlebar grip.

Good tip. The only reason I used it so far is because it's easier to work the kickstand if I shut the engine off and dismount. I never use it on anything else I own.
You know, I've been paranoid that my flywheel's loose. I know I read it's possible, but it's just a noisy clutch. I don't know if I've always turned the bike off by the button though. I did accidentally push the starter once though when the bike was running. Not too brite.

Aprilia's tech. note 008-2006 explains that bikes with engine serial numbers greater than the following are verified to have properly tightened flywheels:
RXV 450 -> 2042
SXV 450 -> 1824
RXV 550 -> 1388
SXV 550 -> 1934
If your engine serial number is lower than those indicated, you should have the flywheel inspected. The embossed serial number should be visible on the engine from the rear of the bike, IIRC.
The correct tech note for the engine serial numbers is Tech Note 012-2006 which is posted on my web page.
Tech Note 007-2006 explains the procedure to inspect and verify tightening torque.
My sxv 550 as a lower engine number does that mean i can take it to any aprilia dealer to be checked?
Yep; you should definitely do so.Originally Posted by Steve0
