    CO sniffer procedures?

I've got access to a bike shop's emissions tester! "Nominal or no charge" are some of my favorite words...

So- where can I find, or who has some steps on how to sniff the dead dinosaur fumes to set up the '04 FP Chipped Tuono/Akra single/Evo Air box (with the ECU pots enabled, of course)?

I've set it up by ear and with the assistance you this board (you!) and it's... Soooo close. But not perfect. There's a hint of HC stink at times, and the idle/low rev riding is still a bit lumpy.

The specifics I'm looking for are thus:
At idle, bike and tester fully warmed, what CO/HC settings?
    -TB's or pots adjust... procedure
In the running circuitry, where to set?
    -Pots, no doubt... right?
    Balance between idle and running?
If it's OK at idle/low revs, and off in the higher circuit, where is it happiest? Which way should I 'fudge' the compromise, if needed?

The Aprilia shop manager recommended 2% CO, I've read different here.

So, are there any 'wrenches' out there that have performed this tweak?

    Thanks...

    -Tom

-Off to finish painting the rad side covers, SILVER! heel plates black, and to remove the "You Must Be Stoopid So We'll Put This Ugly Sticker On To REMIND You Of That Fact" stickers...

set the idle to 3-3.5% CO

the trim pots really only affect idle, and just off-idle

Thanks, Ed. Good info on the pots.

Why, then, do you suppose my local shop manager recommended 2%? As I look at both of you as experienced in such matters, that's a large swing...

P.S. I need to order some goodies from you some day real soon... double bubble or touring screen first...

not sure....the service manual calls for 1% which barely runs...

3-3.5% at idle works on almost all bikes, it gives the nicest smoothest idle.

Questions and Answers from Ed @ AF1 (he da man!!!).

Thought I'd drop this in the forum in case anyone else needs the info.

I'd open your TBs about another 1/8 turn each (see below) and reset the trim pots to 3% CO

Q: chip 'secondary' mapping apparently then handles all duties up the rev range, but what impact does the TB setting make up there- any? Minimal?

A: Very minimal....the bleeds are just tiny air passages that let in a little bit of air when the throttle blades are closed. They let in like 1/100 the air of the blades

Q: If it's off up the rev range (CO-wise), what's to be done?

A: Depends on how it is measured.....free reving it in N will produce weird CO numbers. Tested under dyno load, you'll see best power around the 5-5.5% CO. If its off, not much you can do except program that part out with a PC.

    What are the steps?
1] Set TB's first, get a balance, measure CO to get an even reading between the 2?
Then fine tune the pots @ idle?
    Current settings about= 1-1/2 F 1-1/8 R

2] Or Tweak pots first, measure CO to get an even reading between the 2?
Current is the 'recommended' 12 o'clock

Your post regarding pots=idle only: the FP chip 'secondary' mapping apparently then handles all duties up the rev range,

Thanks again--- appreciate your efforts, it'd be nice to be near a dealership like your shop!
