    '04 mille......good news.....bad news

well i was just checking out the manual and found something i had been wondering about and thought i would share it.

i had heard that there are 2 maps already installed in the new milles, stock and a high performance one.

    Good News!

under the Adjustable Parameters section it says

Engine Variant - Set to 1 for standard mapping, 2 for racing mapping

Bad News (for home tuners, back yard performance shops)

this can only be done using the Axone 2000, so you better kiss your dealer's ass so he can change the mapping!

seriously though, there were questions regarding modifications to the new bikes and how the new computer would react. the catch is that this 'racing' map is designed to be used with the Aprilia/Akropovic exhaust system so if i was shopping around for an exhaust systen for th enew bike i would only be considering the Akro system.

every exhaust pipe requires a little different fuel/ignition mapping to get the best out of it and i found this otu fiorst hand when the full 2-2 Arrow superbike replica system made 20hp/20ft-lbs more than the stock headers with the Harris slipon on the project Tuono i built.

it doesnt hurt that Akropovic is probably know as the best exhaust manufacturer in the world.

no, i have no idea of pricing on the systems for the new bike, and i have no idea if the 'race' map changes the ignition timing.

no green wire to cut, no chip to change, just plug and play.

i'm guessing the first service would be the perfect time to get the pipes installed and the map switched over.

    Thanks!

    Thanks Clarkie, that's good info.

Any idea if there will be an '04 Tuono, and if so, when?

Think that computer will be like the one they use to change the operation parameters of the Ditech? READ: Nintendo GameBoy!!

Yeah, hanging out in the dealership and my buddy the mechanic whips out the gameboy to do some work on a Ditech scooter. Killed me.

Boy that sucks ass big time for me at least. The shop here has pretty much said no way to that tool, too much money and all. Hell Aprilia is forcing them to send a mech to school. Te mech wants to go, but way too much to get into .

I did a little search on the net - it seems that Siemens ECU's are used in a wide range of cars...
There are ALWAYS some electronics expert, that has made a kitchen-table interface to these babies... the challenge is now to find him and make a copy!

Clarkie - is there any type or specs for the new ECU?

In the Uk we are being quoted 850 gbp for the slip on cans and 1400 gbp for the Akra full system.

It does seem that having a dealer who has the equipment to change the maps is going to be vital, but Aprilia are only adopting the ideas that some car manufacturers (BMW, Audi for example) have had for a while now in making some servicing work hard to do for non official dealers.

I'm quite sure at some time in the future unofficial software may apprear, but for now as Clarkie says it looks like if you want race cans the official versions are the ones to go with for now.

    hey ryan,

from whta i understand the dealers have to but them if they want to remain a dealer.

same as sending the tech to school (2 day corse) which to me is a good idea.

we have all heard everyone horror stories about mechanics at the aprilia dealerships not knowing something or screwing things up, sending a tech to school will help the customers (you guys/girls) have some piece of mind when they drop their bike off.

the same dealers that refuse to send a tech to school are probably the same shops that spend a fortune replacing tanks etc that the techs have dropped or scratched while working on a bike.

these bikes are not your typical jap bike, you work on em like a jap bike and things will get broken.

thats what worries me about people who take their bikes to their 'buddy' for valve checks, anyone that gets their 'buddy' to adjust the valve shims is going to get a big shock when their bike is in bits and they have to call the aprilia tech line to get it back together. even having the manual might not help.

aprilia's tech school is bike specific, they will tear down and rebuild real motors, all of them, scooters as well.

    just my opinion.

Yeah, Skip and I are good friends, he is an awsome technician, He is the one that always works on my bike, we usually go riding every sunday he traded his mille in for a 999s but said he would love to get the mille back as a second bike. that guy can move in the twisties when he gets on it. I mentioned that by your posts that you sound like you really know your stuff, he said the same, he knew who you were and told me he has talked to you before The thing i like about him is he "cares" about what he does, "enjoys" it, and "knows" what he is doing, he gets into mods and tuning. They are the best dealer i have every been to, they are also nice enough to have me do some decal stuff for them from time to time, no complaints here they treat me like gold when i go in there

I wanted to go to the open house, but my co-worker was on vacation that week, he always works saturdays, and months before i offered to work for him while he was gone and missed it, next time.

skip said there are a few board members who have called him and started coming in up there for service

I Reccomend them highly for Sales and Service

sounds like a good idea for a new thread, rather than pointing out the bad dealers shout out for the good ones.

    Map Messin'

I picked up the posh '04 RSV brochure yesterday and it showed a couple different exhausts in the accessories section: a pair of slip-on mufflers and the Akrapovic full system. A description of the former said it came with "dedicated mapping" and the latter one is "Complete with dedicated EPROM." Something else to look into! I also wonder if the full Akrapovic system keeps the lambda (exhaust O2) sensor intact? If not, we are probably gonna be back to square one with mixture variations due to fuel pressure and other factors...

Didn't you learn ANYTHING Ducelectronics taught you? It's not an EPROM, it's a PIC controller. :p
