    Engine Problems after Tuning

    Hello all!

I seem to have a problem with my Mille "Speciale" Project and I need your opinion on this one!

I got the bike back from the shop on Friday after doing some major tuning to my 1999 engine which included the following:

    Pistal Racing high compression pistons
    Factory intake cams
    Tuono heads ported
    Full blueprinting
    STM slipper

Of course everything in the engine is brand new including cam chains, valve sealers, rod bearings etc.

As soon as I fired up the engine there was a mechanical noise up until 3000rpm above which the sound was pretty normal just like the old days. I went out for a spin only revving up to 5000rpm because I have to run the engine in...

I was cruising for about 3km and everything seemed normal with the temp around 70o C. Then stop in order to head back to the shop and I was surrounded by white smoke which was coming from the cans, first the left hand side and then from both!

As soon as I started moving again the smoke stoped but I was sure that this was not a good sign!!! It was deffinately oil because I could smell it but again the temp was normal and the oil light was off. The bike did it again a couple of times while I was waiting in a light and the rev was not stable (probably due to cams). As soon as I am on the move and the engine is reved above idle the smoke stops and may not start again when I am stopped!!!!!

I took the bike home and yesterday I removed the plugs to see what is going on.

Front cylinder: everything seems ok with a brownish colour which probably indicates poor mixture

Rear cylinder: lots of oil in plugs....means trouble!!!

So what the hell is that noise??? And what about the oil smoke??? Is it possible that the mechanic fucked up with the cam timing causing this noise and oil smoke??? Is the high compression pistons responsible for all this mess or the blueprinting went wrong causing all sorts of problems???

    What do you think????

I hate to take the engine apart again or even look for a new engine...\

    Regards

    Sure it's white smoke?

    Oil smoke isn't white...

Oil smoke is normally blue tinged - sure it wasn't steam?

My experience is that white smoke indicates too much fuel or not enough air in the mix.

If it is oil burning a leakdown and compression test will show if oil is able to enter the combustion chamber.

    Deff oil!!!

    Hello mate!

I am afraid it is deffinaely oil since I can smell it and second I found oil in the belly pan as well!

The good thing is that the oil in the belly pan comes from the lower exhaust joint as gas...

I talked to my mechanic and he told me that the valve stem seals that Aprilia sent him were not the same as the ones that came out of my original engine! The "new" ones are just plastic were the original ones had some metal in them....

As far as the noise from the engine I talked to a guy inUK that raced Mille's with Pistal pistons and Factory cams as well as Kent cams and he told me that the noise is normal! Apparently the high compression pistons that Pistal makes make this moise up until 3000rpm...
