    Pegaso or F650

Sorry for asking you lot this question, but its something alot of you must have thought about. I'm just getting rid of my Monster 900 for something a bit more usable and a 650 single is at the top of my list, and more specifically the F650 and Peg. Now....obviously having had a Duc, I dont wanna buy back into Italian unreliabilty or silliness so the Beemer seems attractive, but the Pegs come in at a better price and with the same engine etc, I wondered what most Peg owners think on this topic. I've got my eye on a 97 Peg with 16k miles with service history in that slightly pipe n slippers Burgundy n Silver. Its going with 3 months warranty for 1600 quid. The next best is an F650ST 2000 on a X plate with 18k for 2100 quids.

    Any advice?

to buy or not to buy..peggy or F'feee....

    hey dude!
    my suggestions..if u're going for the looks...its the peg3 97 model!
if u're going for the price...its the peg3 again!..if u're going for the lower maintenance...its the peg3 again & again..! if u're going for the performance on medium range distance..its peg3 again & again & again..!if u're going for commuting to work (without serious traffic jamms..) its peg3 again & again & again & again...! it's a damn good bike for all these! However, if u're going for the paris-dakkar type..then obviously thumbs up for the F650! So...what do u think?
I owned a peg3 '97 myself, similar colour to the one u described...condition..perfect with 30K kilometres burned on the road. I enjoy riding this bike up & down hills taking corners like a pro rider...ha..ha..!
Seriously, if you were thinkin of getting one, make sure replacement parts such as the rectifier is available for this particular model..Iotherwise u might have to do modification when the trouble occurs... had mine replaced with a RS250 with wiring modifications.....

    hope this would help! cherio...!

Bit of a silly question to ask on this forum! ;-)
Bet you don't get too many go for the beemer.

There's a "what's good about the Pegaso", and "what's bad about the Pegaso" threads, somewhere on here, have a look at them.
I've got a 2000 model, in the colours you mention. I thought it looked a bit girly with the pink (ish) small screen, so fitted a longer dark tint Zero Gravity model (available from this site). Now I can hang out with the boys and hold my head high. It really changed the overall look/feel.

Seriously though, the beemer is a good bike too. It has to be, as the earlier the one you look at, the closer it will be to the Pegaso it's based on/around. Beemers generally cost a bit more, but hold there price a bit more. What really put me off them was that the Pegaso just looks so much better, and you are not one of the BM herd etc.

BMW try to make out they're so much better than the rest when it comes too build quality and customer service etc, but whenever I've read articles in Bike mag, their one always seem to have a problem that BMW say is unusual. However near to me is a BMW dealer that is frequently put up as one of the best (of any) dealers in the country. All I can say is most times I've been in there, I've found them piss poor! Also there's always lots of guys putting their hardly used beemers (all models) into the workshops, or standing around talking about the problems they're having.
Also it's a bit like the Harley Davidson dream thing, Harleys have some people that are real hard core - bit of renegades etc, and BMW have some people who are global travellers sleeping rough etc. But in both cases the other 80% plus are people who have dull jobs, a good living and want too buy into a dream!

    Okay, rant over :-)

    Buy the Pegaso.
There's some nice KTMs about also. Not sure if there's anything that old/price though.

Still, all things considered "buy the Pegaso!"

    Rob :-)

    Just one other thing :-)

If your only paying £1600 quid, and it's a 99 model of Peg, have a good look at the part of the exhaust that goes down from the mufflers (and the mufflers). The originals are made of mild steel and rot quickly. If the originals are still on they will need replacing very soon (£200 - $500), which will greatly inflate your £1600.
Think BM's will last longer as they're routed differently. Try a BM forum to see if they suffer also though.

Agree with Xyberguy and Rob. I have seen hardly used Beemers coming into the shop. Most Pegasos iI have seen are well used by their owners. Not had much problem with my 1997 Peg3 or my earlier 1995 Peg1. Bye for now....

    Some decent food for thought

Hmmm, in many ways Rob you probably told me what I wanted to hear on the money front and not what I wanted on the choice front. As a long time Beemer owner from when I was 17 thru til I was 32, I did fancy the F650ST but with my current cash situation the Peg seemd like a decent alternative. I wasnt quite a globetrotter but did cover huge mileage around Europe and the Med area and for me the analogue of reliability will always be BMW, plus I could strip a boxer almost to the crank at the side of the road with a plastic fork and one hand in the dark Anyway, the Monster has been a big break for me and I loved it, but got pissed off with the fact that they had managed to take a beautiful engine in a great frame with superb suspension and give it the electrical prowess of a mop bucket with a leak. Apart from that as Im a tad taller than the designers took account of it hurts my poor little hips
Allied to that all the villages round here with 20mph limits which it just wont do, apart from with a 14t sprocket which shags the torque delivery at higher speeds, I thought it was time to look at something a tad more fun, hence the current choice. Japanese is out of the question, I just dont click with them.
KTM, hmmmm, mostly in the Motard vein and again not really that usable apart from in hooligan mode. If I'm satisfied that the Aprilia is of decent reliability electrically and pasrts arent impossible to come by then I'm happy.

    cheers for the info

You can get exhausts from :- Remus, Predator, Staintiune, Leo Vince, Arrows, Rovab, Marving and Gazelle. You pay your money you make your choice.
Gazelle, Leo Vince and Staintune are the better ones (I think), but you obviously pay "top dollar" for them. These are all twin exhausts. Think some of the others may be singles, not sure tho.

Most of the Pegasos come with upside down forks. I have seen the odd one with traditional forks (check out "pegaso pics" on this forum). Not sure if these were sold only in some locations, or for a short period, but definetelly most you see will have upside down ones.

I've re read my earlier reply ref. rant on BMs and Harleys. Basically what I was trying to say is that buying a bike is a personal statement, I've often thought about buying one of the bigger BMs, but find them costly (first off), and don't particularily like their image etc.
I'd go with the one you'd most be proud of to open the garage door to. If you buy purely on sense, as opposed to emotion you'll probably end up buying a Honda CBR600s, or even cars! So let love play it's part

Guess you did that last time with the Ducati tho :-(

Good luck, and let us all know what you decide.

Motocross bars, with the bar between them are standard. Some people fit Renthals to lessen the vibration slightly.
    Doesn't bother me though.

Review the price you are paying. I've just sold a 99 black Peg on eBay this week for £1195. The bike is clean, has a full Arrow exhaust system and a Givi topbox.

Just had a look at the above. Looks okay from pics, and from owners comments sounds like it's been looked after.

As with all purchases though, check it out fully, then again :-)

Go to "shop online" at top of this page, then in the categories section on the left hand side select Pegaso 650, and voila a whole host of goodies, including the screen at $70 :-)
