How should it feel at low revs

Picked up an 04 Factory recently and had them update the ecu software before it first left the dealer. The engine idles fine and doesn't stall.
Just had the 600 mile service done and the tech said the throttle sync was dead on. Now it seems that the engine runs rough (almost like a misfire) under a load between 2500 -3500 rpm which is freeway speed range in 6th. If I drop it one or two gears and get over 4000 rpm it feels fine. If I want to run 75 -80 plus when I am on the freeway it runs great - there just are a few spots where that is not a good idea
So the question is - am I just lugging the engine at the lower rpm or....?

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Bill,

Twins generally runs a bit rough at low rpms. In standard trim with the latest map the aprilia will be a bit rough lower down. I had not just the throttle bodies/cylinders balanced, but also had the cams degreed. Setting the cams correctly helps a lot. My bike will run smooth as low as 2k rpm.

The bike will kick/cough/lurch between 2.5 & 3.8, i have had three and they all do it, get map 2 & it stops, i have kept one on map one, and changing between bikes is novel, one kangaroos the other spins up

    Arnie,
Bike is box stock - it is only two weeks old (and 900 miles).
Want to make sure there is no issue before I start modifying anything.
    Thanks,
    Bill

I agree that twins tend to run rough down low, but not like a misfire. It is kind of "lurchy" at less than 3,000, but it shouldn't jerk you around too bad. I did not have any trouble with the stock map; now I have map 2 and the idle seems a little unsteady, but the response through the range is just fine. Apparently, your root cause is in what the dealer did if you noticed a change immediately afterwards.

    Sean,
That is a good description of how the bike behaves. This is my first V twin and my last twin was 650 Lightning - completely different animals. Just was trying to figure out if it was normal or not and it seems like it is.

Can't go to map 2 until I get rid of the cats in the exhausts and right now I am trying to figure out which "quiet" exhaust I want.

    900 miles

Put soom miles on it. The more miles the better and smoother it will run. This is my 2nd mill and at about 5,000 miles is when it seems to be pretty much broke in.
    Pc3 could work wonders allso.
Mine runs very smooth between 2.5k-3.5k.
But then I run a jackhammer all day at work too J/K
No but really mine runs smooth as silk as low as 2.5k rpm's

Mine runs great from 2k, and wants to launch into the air at 3k... no bad behaviour at all

Power commander, new exhaust and air box mods made an incredible difference...

Stock bike was just depressing under 6k.
