Finally got an answer to my enqiury (after 4 phone calls over a three week period....communication eh!!).

Apparently you should take hold of the side stand when it is up and see if it can be waggled around against its pivot point, you also need to check that the return spring actually holds the stand up to its fullest extent. Thats it, no cracks to search for, no broken lugs or impending doom just a floppy return spring/side stand Panic over then!!!!
