Modifying Standard Exhaust for more Noise?

My standard exhaust is in very good condition (none of the usual bad rusting), but I'd like it to be a bit noisier and, probably flow easier, maybe combined with a K&N filter. Has anyone had any experience with modifying the standard exhaust?
I know you drill out the two rivets on the end piece to get access to the inarrds, but would like to know a bit more about what happens next, and what faces me before taking this step.
I presume you need to cut some of the baffles or remove some of the packing. Just how hard is this though?
I know this will effect the fuel mixture a bit, but I think it shouldn't be enough to have to start re jetting.

    Any advice????
    Rob :-)

    more noise

    Hi Rob,
I went thru an Arrow/K&N mod and after some re-jetting got a perfect result. Lots of power!
A little loud, but I'm doing some research right now to fit the Pro Moto Billet inserts. Should turn out nice.
If you're interested, let me know and I will keep you posted.

Thanks I am intersted in how yours turns out.

But as my "standard" exhausts are in very good nick I don't want to spend a few hundred pounds on a new set just yet. I know the design, and rust will mean this is an eventuality though.

What I want to do is get a bit more performance(if I can) from the standard ones, but most importantly a bit more noise. Not a huge amount though!

I took the baffles out of the standard exhaust. It was pretty easy. Drill the rivets out and then use a Dremel cutting wheel to remove the baffle. I left the lower baffle in because it looked too hard to get out easily. The sound afterward is very deep and rumbly. You should rejet because it does lean things out a lot. You will also notice a big decrease in fuel efficiency.

If I were to take them apart again, I would get the cans ceramic coated black or even silver before reassembling them. That would solve the corrosion issue.

    Mufflers

Mine had catalytics in them so I took them out and made my own shell from .080 aluminum with the outlet pipe elbow. I made a small baffle that is welded to the inlet pipe but that's it. It sounds like a 996 with slip-ons!! Not too loud but very throaty and deep sounding.

    Muffler rivets

The rivets on the stock mufflers don't do anything but attach the stainless end piece. It is only cosmetic as well. The mufflers are heavy and very badly made. I cut mine apart and couldn't believe the restriction. I installed a K&N filter and did not rejet, the bike ran rich before so this made it just right. I also made my own rear sprocket from Stainless and it is one tooth smaller than stock. It will last forever as it is 17-4 PH stainless with a brinell hardness of 382!!
