Question How Do I Mirror Polish My Frame

just wondering if anyone has done this to their frame and swinger. Ive tried various polishing fluids and all they seem to do is add a bright shine. i am after a really polished finish like on the rs125 or rsv250.

ive tried both of them mate. trouble is even as new the 250 frame isnt as highly polished as the 125. you will probably know what i mean having owned both.
the polished look on this frame is what im after

my old bike was an AF1 Futura, frame wasnt as shiney as the RS125. you can get a fair shine using those things but to get real mirror finish like that i think youll need to use a proper electrical buffer.

i know what you mean tho, the 250 frame and swinger does seem duller

    rs 250 frames are coated.
they must be grinded or sand blasted to get that coating off.
this coating is also very hard and it will be much work to grind it off.
also i do not know a way to polish scratches out of that coating.

Why strip a laquered frame just to gt it more shinry, its not there for no reason, it will protect the frame!

It's a pretty easy process, the clear coat is removed with a special clear coat remover (daaa) or you can use oven cleaner and keep a close eye on it but I dont recommend it, it can eat in a pitt the aluminium. Then it's just normal polishing with a buff and compound. It comes up a treat. Pics dont do it justice it really is a perfect mirror finish, you should give it a polish with something like autosol or mothers every couple of weeks but the bike below still looks pretty perfect after about 6 months, well did before it went down the road!!

The easiest way would be to remove your panels then take it to a polisher, that's what the below bike did and about 100 squid later came back looking amazing, about twice as bright as a new RS125.

We started with220 grit sand paper to cut the coating
    then went to 400
    then went to 600
    then to 800
    then to 1200
    then to 2000

    everytime it was wet sanded.
when finished polished with wenol metal cleaner then with wenol final polish. If you work about 2 hours a day you can have it finished in about a week.

    frame polishing

The frame & swingarm on the RS250 are anodised, this is a very hard coating & will take a lot of work to remove it.
To do it yourself, Throttle's method of using increasingly finer grades of wet & dry is the only way I know of.
I have had the frame & swingarm of my Fireblade done by a local polishing company (Medway Buffers) this cost me £180.
I polished the smaller bits myself using Wet & dry, then a buffing wheel on a bench grinder, very time consuming & very messy.

Sure they look good when polished but they are a pain to keep that way, i'd much prefer my frame and swinger on my rs125 to be powder coated black to save time, when i can be arsed to polish it up (very rarely now its winter) i use peek metal polish, bought it at a truck show, works a treat.
