    chain and sprocket ?'s

Is it pretty much a given, that the chain should be replaced when the sprocket is being replaced? The bike has 18.5k miles with the original chain...the rear is a titan tough alum 44t, installed at about 4k miles (14.5k miles ago). Bike is ridden hard, but not abusive...about 6-8 track days. How long can chains last?

Mine has 14k miles and so far it's fine. Canyon riding only, and it gets lubed every 200 miles. I've heard of chains lasting 25,000 miles and others only 10,000. A lot depends on your riding style, of course. As a rule of thumb if you can pull the chain rearward 1/8" or more away from the rear sprocket, it's time to replace both chain and sprockets. Aluminum sprockets wear out faster than steel as do 520 chains instead of 525's.

Most would say if you change your sprokets, you should replace the chain aswell. at 18K miles, I would say go ahead and do the chain all while you have it apart. but thats just MHO....
