Stick with the RS or go for a restricted 400!??

Just wondered what everyones opinions was on this. Ive had the rs a year now (and a rg125fun for 2years before that) and starting to want something different, the bikes done nearly 17000km so im expecting things to start going wrong soon on it! Looking for a nice gsxr400 to have restricted to 33bhp for the next 9months untill my liscence lets me ride anything but what im thinking is ill miss the powerband the rs has, but by having the 400 ill get reliability, more torque, and the bigger bike looks of the gsxr.. Whats everyone reckon!?

Hi, i think you should stick with the RS for the 9 months as a restricted 400 may be a bit of a dog. Although the 400 has similar engine chareteristics to a 2-stroke in that you have to rev the knackers of the thing to get the most out of it ( although the ones i have riden RVF400, ZXR400 have all been full power) another decisive point, for me any way( as i am in the same position as you) is the insurance. When i was looking in to this i got quotes for RVF400, Ducati 748 and an R6 restricted to 33bhp and the companies would insure me but for the same price as if it was full power which put me off the idea, this may be worth looking at. But its up to you supose.

    All the best

Kno what u mean yeah, wouldnt be as thrilling to ride as the rs but they still handle pretty well and i think they look wicked even tho there 10years old now. Been checking out the insurance and your not gonna believe this but they only wanted 170quid for a gsxr400 with the company im with now, the rs costs me £330 so i checked id heard him right cos that seems well cheap. Even for me dads gsxr1100 they could do it for £500!

Thats intersting what company is this and what type of cover where you quoted for at the mo iam paying £872 TPFT for my RS and was quoted RVF=£754, R6= £1172 748= £1200. That was with my exsisting insurer Bennets and am sure i can get cheaper, The other reason why i may be being quoted so high is because i have only been riding 10 Months and passed my test 2 months ago so i dont have a years no claims? Have you decided what to do yet?

The 400 was for tpft and tpo on the 1100, tpft was gonna be £877 on that. Im with quoteline125 or rampdale as its also called. I remember trying bennets couple of years back and they quoted me stupid prices on 125's so might be worth trying somewhere else. The no claims discount does make a difference, ive got 4 years but im still only 20 tho. Im going to have look round few bike shops, u dont see many gsxr 400 about tho and thats my fave out of all the 400's apart from maybe the rvf but there too expensive still..

Yeah bennets is expensive but i originally started out with tangent south west who have recently been taken over by bennets and thats why iam with them. Most if not all gsxr400 are imports arnt they. have you also looked at the CBR400RR. The RVF is a liitle bit expensive for what it is i supose but it is a crackin bike. Have you thought about the RS250 much they are a little expensive but its the only bike i have ever ridin that made me smile more than my 125 and riden right they can match a 400 speed wise?

ive just passed my test and am planning to get a gsxr 600 which is £928 tpft from click quote but im sure i can get it cheeper. i was tempted by a 400 but they are a simular weight to a 600 and have less toque and harder to get parts for. My friends got a restricted gsxr after selling his rs125 and he says its alot faster and tops out at 110mph which anit to bad. He also says its only restricted in the carbs so putting a set of carbs from a breakers would de restrict it, not sure of how true tht bit is tho but 33bhp can get a bit borin some times.

Yeah ive seen the cbr400, not that keen on them, prefer the more aggressive look of the gsxr but ive heard off couple of mechanics they can be bit unreliable so might have to go for a zxr. Being as i gotta have it restricted im not gonna bother with an rs250 dont think it would be worth it and ive had enough of 2strokes for a bit anyway, had one for 4years now!

    Re: re:

i would keep the rs untill u can ride anything, chances are u would want something more than a 400 anyway when u could heave anything and u wont have to suffer teh high insurance costs and the costs of restricting it and then derestricting it....
