    Centerstand

Okay, I need a centerstand. I called for a quote for one about 2 weeks ago, and the dealer gave me a price of about $130 retail and the part number was 8795035. Now I called to order it, and I am told that the centerstand will cost $220, and there is no such part number in the system. The number now is 8146757. The online parts book shows the original number of 8795035.

What the heck is going on? Could it be that aprilia has changed out for a more beefy (and more expensive!) centerstand? Maybe they actually realize that there was a problem with the old one and have fixed it, although with significant cost added.

I was willing to pay $130 or so, but $220? That's a bit steep. Is there a viable alternative? I don't see how a pit stand or something similar is going to help me when I go to do serious maintenance (wheels off). I already changed out the fork oil, and the way I held the bike up was not fun or 100% safe.

I know it won't help me for any roadside breakdowns, but for a lot less than $220 I can set up a hoist in my garage. Any ideas guys?

I ordered #8795035 and received the centerstand kit complete with all hardware and instructions two weeks ago.
$130 is the correct price for the kit, as shown in the Aprilia Accessories book not the std. parts book.

The 8146757 # is for a Rally Raid Caponord.
Find another dealer that knows how to look-up parts.

    I recommend detroiteurocycles.com.

I used these guys to get my parts, primarily because when I called they seemed to know what they were talking about.

I'm an advocate of dealing with your local dealer- unless that local dealer is an idiot.

These guys have been fairly competent in the past, and I did call two dealers (same story at both). The second dealer is the New York City aprilia dealer who is supposed to be HUGE. I have never been there myself though.

My lack of confidence in the local dealers is one of the main reasons that I know that I MUST get a centerstand so that I can do all of my own maintenance. Maybe this is why they are all conspiring against me!

    cherryc,

Explain to your dealer that because the Caponord is not originally equipped with a centerstand, that part is not listed in the parts book. The stand listed in the parts book is for a Rally Raid.

The centerstand is an accessory item that is listed as a complete kit in the Aprilia Accessories Catalogue.

If you order the p/n 8146757 that is listed in the parts book you will get only the stand without mounts and it will be a longer stand to accommodate the taller Rally Raid Caponord that does come with a center stand as original equipment.

    I just got one

I got one at Moto Italiano in San Mateo where I bought the bike. It hink it was around 130.00.

You should have seen me trying to install it without any instructions.

It looks like the kick stand has to come off to access the left side holes and since I have no center stand (yet) I had no way to keep the bike vertical to do it.

I need a work stand so I'll get one and then back to the drawing board.

Put the bike in gear and lean it up against a wall on the handlebar end.
That’s how I installed the centerstand on mine.

Yes, you have to remove the sidestand. Like amauri, I leaned the bike along a big post, with a rope to hold it still in case of...

    It's a 20 mn job doing slowly...

Make sure you tighten the bolts correctly. That are heavily stressed, especially sidestand when turning the bar with the stand on the ground. My 3 bolts were loosen...

    Lightbulb Aprilias...

    CherryC,

Same thing happened to me. My dealer was unable to explain the difference in price...ever.

At first the kid tried to order a Rally Raid stand, I caught that part.

That said, I haven't installed my stand yet. From what Stu wrote I wanted to beef it up first!

    Ergo,
Any chance you can link me to what Stu wrote or at least paraphrase it? I have a center stand on order now and don't want to miss a needed upgrade in my haste to install it once it comes.

    Adam,
The centerstand arm has a tendency to bend out of position, especially if used while the bike is heavily loaded. I had mine gussetted as shown here. Then, I had to grind it to not foul the side stand or exhaust system when both stands are retracted. The bottom picture shows the outer gusset ground down for clearance. Neither of the finished gussets are visible when the stand is retracted.
