I just put Mobil 1 red cap 15-50 full synth (auto) in mine and the shifting is the smoothest to date.

Is the Mobil 1 red cap 15-50 full synth a motorcycle specific oil or a Car oil?

I've heard may people say they had great results with Mobil 1. I use it in my car, but I have never been sure if there was a bike specific version.

And is there something specific about the "Red Cap" (other than it is Red!)?

    It is a car oil.
I think the red cap is just their(Mobil1) ID for the 15-50 wt. oil

    Ta.

If it is a Car oil, then whats the story on the lack of 'bike' additives? Dont they say we should always use bike specific oil? Or is it marketing propoganda to get us to pay twice as much for the stuff?

    26 bikes in 8 years...

Well, I have gone through 26 bikes in 8 years...and the last dozen or so have used ONLY Silkolene Race...never any clutch problems...but, I am also anally retentive about changing my oil every 1000 miles. I ride my bikes hard, they take care of me, so I take care of them.

Some where in cyberspace exists an article about OIL written by an Oil engineer who worked for Mobile or Standard Oil or...take yer pick.

He in is article debunks a lot of myths about oils and additives, he makes a very strong case for just using a good oil and not buying into the "special blend" marketing bullshit. I paid 15.00 bucks a quart ONCE, but never again. What for. You'll see if you look up the article.

I am not sure about all this 'get mobil redcap' or fully synthetic stuff is all about. It’s expensive and you only get 4 litres (usually in a container designed to look like a 5 litre!). I know what most people think - it costs more, so it must be better!
You could say that about a Ducati 999 compared to the cheaper and better aprilia factory too - but that is a different thread.

    Aprilia and Rotax have done a great deal of research and development for the RSV100R. They have specified the oil to use in this motorcycle;

Take a look in the owner’s manual at the Lubricant Chart (near the back).
Quote 'engine oil SAE 15w-50 meeting or exceeding CCMC G-4, A.P.I. S.G.'

1 So all you guys using 10w-40 are using the wrong weight oil, I will be using 15w-50 as specified.

2 It does not specify 'motorcycle only oil' - so car oil is bike oil, i.e. no difference for the RSV1000R.

3 If you buy 'motorcycle oil' from your local bike shop you are paying extra for the motorcycle sticker on it.

I will be using a cheap oil 'Carlube' from my local supermarket that meets (and exceeds) the minimum spec. and plan to change it every 5,000 km.

    www.tetrosyl.com Carlube Gold Plus 15W-50 SL/CF 5 litre £7 GBP (12 USD).
Available in the UK from Morrisons supermarket and the MotorMania chain.

In the UK, Mobil 1 (4 litre) costs about £38.60 GBP (67 USD).

So Mobil 1 is about 7 times the cost of Carlube Gold Plus 15w-50. Therefore, I can do twice as many oil changes as someone using fully synth oil and still save cash too!

Is anyone doing the same as me or is everyone hell bent on wasting money in the belief that you are doing the best for your motorcycle?

    Comments please!

Vince, Mobil red cap 5-qts can be had for ~$20 USD in the States, so your comment on "wasting our money" is a relative one. Agree with you on using oil that exceed OEM recommendation, though.

Understand the viscosity factor is key in using full synthetic. The breakdown characteristics of the oil should be consider when use, not how often it should be change. Ultimately, it's the level of protection that is important. Regular oil can only do so much, new or used.

Archille - If we had mobil 1 in the UK at 20 USD we would all be using it! We get ripped off in the UK - I am sure you have heard it all before.

Anyway - a mineral oil that is 7 times cheaper than synth and still exceeds the recommended spec for the RSV1000R is the way to go. Sure fully synth is 'best' as regards viscosity stability but ... I will be changing my mineral oil at 5,000 km before its lost its 'useful' viscosity.

I will wager that my RSV1000R engine matches the lifespan of others using fully synth oil. There is a perceived advantage to using synth oil in autos / bikes - placed in your head by the marketing people!

NB - Fully synth does have its advantages as regards aviation applications where extremes of temperatures far exceeding those found on 2 & 4 wheel vehicles.
