Kerosene is way cheaper and works better for this than WD40.

We use a product called "PB Blaster" at work. Works like a champ on the Asphalt Patch truck.

Add me to the kerosene bandwagon. Used it today to clean off the chain for the bikes first run. Then re-lubed chain of coarse. Cleaned off the rim at the same time. Works great, no paint damage at all.......

I soaked the wheel overnight in wd40. it didnt work, so i used a mixture of petrol and kitchen cleaner and slowly it came off. I should have photographed it as my wheel was completely covered in it.... It is now spotless!

Ever since they seemed to have stopped selling tar remover products which are spirit based, all the water based ones I have tried are useless and don't work. In the end I tried ordinary White Spirit - works brilliantly, and has not harmed paint on my car or bikes. It works quickly and is cheap.

Brake cleaner is a last resort. WD40 does wonders for cleaning chain lube residue off wheels. I even used it on plastic to give a high gloss. I buy it by the gallon.

If you really want to ruin something, use acetone.
