"It is hard to believe today, but back in 2001 Aprilia was Europe's largest motorcycle manufacturer pumping out 330,000 vehicles a year. Today it is a shell of it's former self, selling about 10% of that figure."

I can only speak about the US and my personal observation, but it appears similar elsewhere such as the UK. For whatever reason, Aprilia fails to capture the public consciousness like say, Ducati does. If anything Aprilia is a more hardcore brand and their products in many ways are superior to Ducati.

But Ducati has the edge in marketing and cachet. More than the edge really.

I hope not, but they sure don't advertise.

A large part of what's lacking, at least here in the states, is product/dealer support.

Piaggio needs to do some product support, dealer support and promotion outside of racing. Everyone who is a motorcycle dealer in my area that I personally know tells me that the Aprilia product is good but the dealer requirements and support causes difficulty for them. So they choose to not be dealers. Also, Aprilia doesn't have the product production capacity to support a large US dealer network.

It's sad that Piaggio does not really invest in Aprilia. Look at what Audi has done to Ducati and what KTM has done to Huqvarna.

Aprilia understood the value of modern marketing and contract manufacturing.
note the past tense of that sentence

Very good article, and it is also devastating for a brand enthusiast ... Piaggio is the Fiat brand of motorcycles, and as such, they only know how to live on rents, exploit the image of the brands they have been acquiring and when the have emptied, throw them down the toilet ...

PD: They should imprison the person responsible for a disgusting Chinese motorcycle, carry the Aprilia brand in their tank ...

It's tough going for Italian brands. You have Ducati owned by the corrupt VW-Audi Group, MV Agusta awash in Black Ocean's Russian cash, Benelli owned by the Chinese.
