I have typically found the twins class to be some great racing, both as a spectator and as a racer. It is usually way more fun than 600cc four bangers droning around. But opinions are like assholes......

Agreed about the present M/A 600 supersports "show", where it's mostly a pair of well-funded neo-factory Graves Yamahas putting the hurt on what looks like a field of club racers. How exciting! Huge margins of victory, the only interruption being Valentin Debise and his Suzuki. Appalling, really, and nothing like the AMA 600SS glory days which often provided the weekend's best racing! Not no mo'.

Many years ago the AMA BoTT was fabulous, the bikes at the front were fast and very innovative. Lucifer's Hammer for example! They were LOUD, they were spectacular, they were crowd pleasers. BoTT is where we also got that first peek at an otto-valvole desmo twin ridden by Marco Lucchinelli, a former 500GP champ! Your stuff did not have to be "homologated", it just had to pass Tech Inspection. With little exception it was run what ya brung, and the bigger the better. AWESOME.

The factory teams just have way more money involved than anyone else.
Even the smaller teams like Team Hammer, Tuned Racing or Altus have their riders pay a fair bit for their seat to compete.

Keep an eye on Braeden Ortt and Conner Blevins (if he can get some Kawasaki support) next season.

Wade, that defines old school cool. Gene Church did a lot of hammerin' aboard that bike. And Don Tilley, a tuning legend!

Lucifers Hammer / LH2 was cool. There was a later Harley racer made in Japan called the Sundance Harley. That was probably the most high tech, trick, HD I have ever seen.
Some more cool twins racers were the Raceco Guzzi, the amazing Dr John Guzzi (yeah, I know, I am partial), The two Brothers Honda Hawk, and all the FBF Ducati's. There were some very creative garage specials, like guys fitting 4 valve Honda heads from an XR to a Ducati two valve motor. Those were some fun days.
I realize the new MA Twins class isn't going to be like that, but I would not dismiss it as the time to get get lunch.

    Thunda Down Unda.

If there's a modern re-incarnation of Lucifer's Hammer it has to be a 1600cc Irving Vincent. NOBODY would grab lunch while that monster is running!

I was lucky enough to work at the shop where Doug Brauneck worked in the late 80's. Doug was a true hardcore diy privateer racer. He won the BOTT's championship in 88 on a Dr. John's Moto Guzzi. When Road Atlanta came round we all would hang out at Doug's house where Dr. John had set up camp as well. Man, the shit I learned listening to those guys talk!!! It was all moto 24 hours a day. BOTT's was a super cool class where someone who was on the fringes of the national scene with a bit of imagination who was willing to work their ass off could win a national championship. Grassroots racing at its finest. I hope the new twins class represents in the same way.

Their built 3ks down the road from where I live..
they have had trouble racing them, some say they don't comply with period regs, lots of protests over the last couple of years...
to hear them fire up is soul stirring!!!
