    Laverda 668 Ghoststrike Wiring issues

Righto, I have several bikes and one of them is a Ghoststrike 668. I don't get to ride it very often and realize I should still start and run the bike every now and again. This is even more important now, as I have been diagnosed with a serious illness and my wife may be left to sort out my bits and pieces. So anyway, yesterday I went to start it and the battery was flat(ish) -it turned over very slowly so I turned the key off and it carried on winding over until I tapped a relay. I put the battery on a trickle charger for 24 hours and then went back to have another try. Now I am well aware of wiring problem on a r/r because I have an Aprilia Futura and have had to do the wiring mod to the Brown Connector but I was really surprised to see the 2 yellow wires coming from the R/R on the Ghoststrike begin to start smoking and the insulation start to melt before turning the bike off and disconnecting the battery.I haven't traced these wires yet but can anyone tell me a/ where they go and B/what has caused this problem? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

A further update - I now know that the 2 yellows wires go to the alternator but now need to know whether the alternator is faulty, the 2 connectors or the regulator> The wires were heating up between the connectors and the alternator.

most stator systems regulate three wires on the AC side to a stable-ish DC voltage for charging though on scooters and 50cc bikes I have seen as little as a single AC wire. If the wires to the stator have continuity or short to ground then the statot is cooked basically.
