No the connecting rod is there you can see the top of it through the hole in the top of the damaged piston . It is the extended warrantee company not aprilia who I'm fighting hopefully soon with the attorney. And from my reading of this forum, I thought you can't swap with rsv4 engine.

Dealer says they can't say for certain what happened. They filled with warrantee co. Saying they believed can chain tensioner failed throwing off timing.

    Let me elaborate a bit.

If a tensioner failed or if sprocket bolts loosened up, you would have valve to piston contact on both cylinders.

Did the shop who adj the valves give you a log of what the clearances were at before they adj them?

While i agree with Amauri, is it possible that the dealer is trying to file a claim that the warranty company is more likely to accept and approve the repair?

That could be, but keep in mind that the extended warranty companies have their own experts who know how to analyse engine failures.

The dealer should not be making up a BS story, instead they should just tell it like it is... a valve broke and fell into the cylinder. Simple as that.

    Question for the OP:

What exhaust do you have on the bike, and do you have a Race map?

Very good question. I haven't seen that kind of mess since my 2 stroke days!

The bike is totally stock. Yes, their view was it could have been a floating valve (which company won't cover for some reason) or cam tensioner, so that is what they filled as. The adjustment specs. ... i remember seeing them at one point but i don't have them personally to display. They did say not all needed adjustment.

To prove it was not valve float caused by over revving the motor, you can inspect the valve stems on all four valves for the broken cylinder. Examine the upper part of the stems - spring side. If one of the stems shows a brittle fracture with no signs of bending, then that is the valve that initiated the failure, and it's likely a manufacturing defect of that one valve. If all the stems show bending and ductility, then it's likely valve float that caused the failure. However, if it was valve float due to over rev, you would expect to see bent valves in all cylinders. I'll bet you see one valve stem with a brittle fracture.

Is there possibly to get an Aprilia rep to inspect the engine himself to create a report that could help me? The dealer either is unwilling to place a specific cause or uneducated to do so, or perhaps worse knows they screwed up and is doing what they can to hide it.

Hmmm, just a thought. Since I have the factory repair manual I need to review the valve adjustment process to see if "special tools" are required. And ask the tech next time I'm there if he has one.

Yes, there are indeed "special" tools required to do adjustment on the V4. I can think of two very distinct ones unique to the Aprilia V4 that are needed.

Update - See this thread: http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/c...in-the-chassis
