If you're not having a hot start issue but just want a better start the 1st time. Do you do this mod?
Does it make for better starts, period?

Well, I will just install this mod when doing the aprc upgrade. Won't hurt, that's for sure. :-)
    Will report back!

Hmmm. That's a good idea, I'm gathering parts to add aprc to mine too.

So to be clear. We're just buying standard automotive wire cable and crimping our own ends on to it. 15' or are we buying pre-made stuff and I miss that somehow?

I put one together and installed it last night. Now, I just need to find time to ride.

I rode to work today which heats up the bike from excessive idling. The additional 12ga wire did not fix the issue on my bike.

However, I have a 2013 that still has the original battery.

Interesting. Have you checked your stator? The upper half of mine is turning a "light toast" color.

    Yes, thanks for the reminder.

Testing the stator and the battery is the first step in troubleshooting this hot starting slow cranking issue.
Installing the wire I suggested will not fix a weak battery or a shorted out stator.

Also make sure that the cable connections at the battery, solenoid and starter motor are clean and tight.

I have not checked the stator, but that is next.

I'm sure the battery connections are all tight. I'll need to double check the starter.

Appears to have worked for me. Thank you kindly for posting!

2012 Tuono with new model stator and fairly recent new battery. It never seemed to start super strong when hot but never didn't start, until the other day. Cool running temps and ambient temp... pulled off to fuel....went to start and it acted like nearly dead battery. Jump started it. Came home checked voltages and they were ok. Installed wire as in first post. Did a couple test rides with shut down after hot, and it restarted each time. Awesome.

PS At the gas station I attempted an assisted "bump start" and it was laughable!! Jumper cables did the trick though.

    HeyGuys,

So I have about 800 km so far on my new Rf...and I have started to experience hot start after a couple hour ride even tho its like 5c (40f) up here...
any ways....i just bought the wire...and i had in my head 8 gauge ... now I read it supposed to be 12g....can I still add the 8? or should I go buy the 12g like
    amauri said to do.?
    thx

I *think* that should be fine. However, few bucks for that wire, you could just buy a 12g.
Let's see what amauri says. :-)

    8ga is fine.

It's a little bigger than it "needs" to be, but it will work the same. 12 gauge was the recommended due to ease of use and fitment.
Getting 8 gauge is overkill, BUT, it's not going to cause any problems when using it if you route it and install it per the recommendations here.

8 gauge will be a very tight fit on the small terminal at the solenoid, you really should use 12 gauge.
