what oil is the right oil?

I'm confused. As a new owner of an Aprilia 500 I find the owners manual specifies 5W40 oil yet the sticker on the side of my bike that has obviously been placed there by the factory specifies 15W50. So, which is it? What is really the factually correct weight of oil? Please enlighten me. Thanks, guys. Richard fssnoc#4368(KS)

    MX4T

i use Mobil 1 MX4T 10W-40. I run 75-85 mph. the bike seems to run cool consistently runs a little above the 1st hash mark on temp guage.

Richard at Aprilia USA rightly suggest pick a good oil and gas and stick to it. Different brands have different additives and if u vary these additives can sometimes clash. Hence, MX4T and BP Amoco 93 octane.

Also, i am coming up on 4k mi overhaul is there any reason NOT to change the oil & filter immediately prior to it?

bcc333 - I would think there would be no reason whatsoever why you could not go ahead with an oil/fiter change prior to your regular scheduled service.
I do this on both my scoots and autos all the time. Thing is, just let them know what you have already done so they don't do it again and charge you for it.

The valve adjustment will not affect the oil change so long as it is done in a clean environment such as a garage.
