    North Island, New Zealand

Here is a thread about rides by Shivers and Dorso's in the North island, New Zealand.
I've already posted two threads that I'll include here for reference:

Last weekend, I went for a one-day ride through the Wairarapa to the east of Wellington, which is the capital city of New Zealand. Just under 600km.

I took my new Canon 6D on this ride with the GPS logger on, so not only did it record where I rode, but also where I took photos:

I left home before 8 am, in cool crisp weather - its winter here. Here is the view looking out along the Kapiti Coast from Paekakariki Hill. Note the new tank bag I fitted. Just big enough to hold my camera and another lens if needed, plus wallet and phone.

Then down the Hill Road to Pauatahanui. There'd been some flooding the previous weekend and there was still debris on the road, encouraging care around blind corners.

Then up highway 2 and over the Rimutaka Hill, which is one of the favourite scratching roads for Wellington riders. But it was still early and the road was cold and damp, moderating speeds.

As I took this photo a couple of interesting bikes rode past - a 1974 Ducati 750 and a 1995 Yam TRX 850. I joined them for a coffee in Carterton, where we were joined by 1995 Africa Twin. Those riders were content to talk bikes over a coffee and head home, but my day had just begun!

Although we are now into winter, there was plenty of autumn colour in the landscape.

Once of the highway, Wairarapa provides some sublime riding.

I had some lunch at Riversdale Beach and then rode south along the back roads to Martinborough.

The seal soon changed into excellent gravel, with smooth surface and few drifts of gravel. I'd last ridden this road a few years ago on my Pegaso Trail shortly after a grader had "improved" the road, making it much more of a challenge than it was today.

A small church at Homewood. This community was past its heyday, but I enjoued the peace and solitude.

The road became narrower as it climbed into the hills. The Shiver coped wonderfully with the gravel road. Quite a bit of mud in places so she needed a clean once home!

Buildings became sparse and there was no traffic on the road. And autumn colours remained.

The friendly farmer had three dogs on the back of his quadbike, but was in a hurry to take the sheep to a waiting vet, so I missed a classic photo!.
The photo records that road only rose to 350m (1100 feet) above the sea, but enough for a great view.

I was relaxed and enjoying the gravel, when suddenly I was back on tarseal again.

These roads are some of the best in New Zealand for weekend riding, glorious with the crisp greens and long shadows of winter. Here we looking west towards the Wairarapa plain with the Tararua range in the distance.

And the road from Gladstone to Martinbourough is among the best. I met a Yam R1 coming at high speed into a corner, being chased by two other sportsbikes. However, care needs to be taken on these roads with debris and sheep in blind corners. A friend fell off his Ducati not far from here a couple of years ago and hurt himself quite badly. But that's what I like about solo riding - I can set my own pace.

I then met my sister in Wellington. Not a particularly flattering photo from the motorway, but marks the end of a great day.

Lovely shots and ride Frodo. That Canon is doing the business as well.
Always envious of your glorious empty landscapes - sometimes hard for me to imagine from my daily pathways between two rows of stationary cars.

I agree with you on riding solo and setting your own pace, too often in group rides a tendency to outrun your buddies in the twisties leads to carelessness and avoidable wrecks. Beautiful photos again Frodo, thanks for sharing.

    Great one Frodo.

Think I passed you while you were in Carterton - I was heading south on the Shiver on the way to Lake Ferry. We should meet up sometime. I'm in Masterton. Next Sunday 21st, I will be joining an IMOC (the Italian Motorcycle Owners Club) run to Southwoods - meeting there at 12:30. Would be great if you could make it.

    Excellent as always, Frodo-
    Are you Lipstick's long-lost Southern-Hemisphere 2nd cousin?!

Well, I'd love to be able to put the miles in that Lipstick does! Bike has almost 27,000km, so I've done almost 20,000km since I bought it in March last year. Apart from broken clutch springs (replaced under warranty), she's been a real treat!

Rode on some of your route back in March. Lower hutt is an amazing road. Went to Carterton then up to Napier for the night.

If anyone wants my route, inc details of accommodation pm me you email details as I have it all as a PDF doc.

For info, in my opinion the roads were a lot more challenging with more mountain views in the South Island, but the weather was warmer in the North Island

Just got to save up for my next trip now

Hey guys, if you like the pictures posted here you should go see the place for real. I made NZ one of the items on my Bucket List and did a 21 day tour in march. Had a great time despite being on a BMW R1200RT Bike hire and accommodation came to 6k. Flights, fuel and food on top of that. I wasn't holding back as I really didn't think I would be going back (but I am now planning another trip one day) and I suppose it cost me 10k for both of us all in. I also think that with a bit of planing time and a list of where you want to go this could be reduced by quite a bit

The only bad thing I can say about the photos is that they really don't do the place justice.

Dammit Keith, that's now gone up another couple of notches on my Bucket list.

Sounds like it was worth every penny though and thanks for outlining your costs as it's hard to have a rough idea without actually spending a lot of time researching it.
(Having said that I'd have to do some serious trimming on the 10k spend to see if I could get it into my personal comfort zone )
