First race of the year @ Estoril...4th place behind three 750 GSXRs...those bastards are fast!

Started the weekend with a lowside on the free practice and hurt my ego...the rest was fine.

Struggled through Qualif 1 & 2...had a great race start but Im still not physicaly ready for a full race/full throttle.

Lets see how it works out on the next round @ Estoril.

Small report after the second round @ Estoril.

Bike was heating up since the free practice session. The temp went 115 only after one lap at WOT!

Water sprayed next to the rear cylinder (on the left side) and the bellypan.

We checked everything that might cause this...coolant level, bleeded repeatedly, swapped for a new thermostat, checked the water pump for free play, shunted the cooling fans to work full time...

    Nothing worked.

We thought it was a blown head gasket. We decided to overtight the 4 nuts on the rear cylinder and thats when we found out that a cylinder stud was broken.

Thats why the water temp rised so quickly.

I decided to race it anyway, checking the temps and trying not to break the engine.

It was not an easy task...but we finnished 5th and took 11 point home.

I hope next round things get better for me...

    Yeah

But as you must have seen Im faster when I have someone on my "radar".

In the second race, the bike was exactly the same and I did improve my lap times.

Next races are this weekend at the Braga circuit.

One race on Saturday and two on Sunday.

Ill upload the videos and share it with you guys.

Only change on the bike are the Brembo RC19 racing brake pads.

Any mods done ready for this season ? I'm racing a 1999 RSV Mille this season so I'm obviously interested in this thread for any tips & mods. I notice no one mentions changing the clutch from hydraulic to cable yet this was considered an essential mod for Ducati superbike teams, indeed most bikes with hydraulic clutches were changed for cable operated if used for racing ??????

Well, the only mod for this season is going from 525 chain to 520.

A good advice a friend of mine (former Aprilia RSV racer).

I hope it will improve acceleration even for just a bit.

Im running a 15x44 set up and planning on using 15x46 for the short track we have here (small 900m straight).

Video of one race in that particular track recorded from my friends R6 :

I lead most of the race but then started to lose grip on rear tire and at the very end, no front end grip aswell.

Note the big low-side from the white GSXR750 on the first left-hander, on the very first lap! Right in my face!!!

My recommendations would be as follows:
    1. Race the bike as is and see if you like
    2. Don't try to be a hero in the first corner
    3. Don't expect to win the first race (although it could happen)
    4. Make sure to take a picture of the smile you have when you come into to pits!
    5. HAVE FUN DOING IT!

As for mods, wait until the first weekend is over and see if you like it. Next I would say look at wheels and suspension. Keep the gear pattern standard unless you've used GP shift in the past.

    Just my $.02 worth

Many thanks, sensible advice, as regards race GP shift this is my preferred choice as it is what I am use to. I wonder if there is a cheaper way of getting a rod linkage without the expense of purpose built rearsets, such as maybe a Yamaha R6 link rod and knuckle ?

Are you able switch the (enough room) linkage around and put it on top instead of below?
