First time racing - "99 Aprilia RSV Mille

    Hi there guys,

As said in the topic title Ill start racing on a 99 Aprilia RSV Mille.
Im already quite used to the V60 engine and frame as I am the proud owner of a "slightly modded" 03 Tuono.

The class Im signing in is for old time Superbikes and the ones in the front, so far, are a couple of modded FZRs 1000, a YZF750SP and a ZXR750RR. The rest of the less competitive field is composed by some dukes 748/916, Aprilia RS250, etc...

Some CBR600 well ridden are also at the front at the slower tracks.

Im not very light (aprox 220 pounds) and my track experience is short (some track days and a single endurance race on an Aprilia RS125 Challenge with a 5th overall).

The bike will be fitted some of the mods I had on the Tuono like the dual exhaust, Gabro chip, intake stacks and K&N airfilter.

    Some questions for you guys...

    - What can I expect performancewise regarding the competition?
    - Where should I put my money first (knowing that this is a low-cost racing budget)?
    - Should I go reverse gear or stick with the OEM pattern?

    Thanks

I responded to your question in my thread, but as for GP shift vs. standard, that's personal preference. I have been wanting it on a few tracks, but on others it doesn't bother me.

    Hi guys!

I have been so overwelmed with all this new experience that I forgot to come back here and share the races!

We finished the bike the day before free-pratice! I had never rode it. First time on it was on FP.
    Near-stock setup on everything.
I mean...Michelin Supersport tyres (120/180), single sided Aprilia Titanium exhaust (and eprom), suspensions tuned at mid-point and thats it.
FP went pretty well. Stiffned the suspension all around and dropped the tyre pressure to go for a bit more grip.
Clutch slipping like hell on 4/5/6th gears.
    On QLF1 I got 4th place behind 2 GSXR 750 and a Triumph 955i.
Same on QLF but chopped a full second on my best lap because I changed the rear tire to a Michelin Power Cup 190.
Got more confidance and I was pretty excited about the race!
As soon as the race started I had only one thing in mind...to get that 955i!
Lost a bit of contact in the first couple of laps but then I got used to the tire and I was getting faster every lap.
At about 5 laps to the end of the race I managed to pass the 955i and I just had to keep him behind me.
Surprised I kept pulling from him and at the end of the race I was about 5 seconds ahead.

Not bad for my first race...3rd place and podium champagne bath!

    Thanks!

Went for the 2nd race two weekends ago.

    It went better than expected!

Same track and weather a bit worst.

I did some changes to the bike in order to cut a couple of seconds.

    - Dual exhaust
    - Clutch revised
    - Gabro chip
    - Carbon fiber velocity stacks
    - Brembo Race Carbon-Ceramic brake pads
    - Michelin Power Cup VB at the front to match the rear

I did improve a lot my lap times! Much more grunt from the bottom and much more confidence with the new front Power Cup.

    2,5s better!

Good enougth for 4th place at the grid a a final 4th place, 2nd in my class (Classic Superbikes)! Fantastic start from the line as I passed everyone and got 1st at turn 1. Then got passed by the other (faster) guys.

    Here are some pics

Next race only in 2015...I hope to attend to some trackdays in order to get more confortable on the mille...still pretty attached to the Tuono body position. I have to correct that ASAP!

Personal preference. I was finding that at one of the tracks I run, standard shift was very hard to get an upshift as I exit a few of the corners, so I'm looking forward to GP shift this year.

I installed a quickshifter on my bike, but the normal vibration tricked the switch into thinking I was trying to shift. It kept cutting the ignition out on the straights. I ended up taking it off, and installing it on my r6. Soon as I removed it, the ignition cut-out quit.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Guys...I need to change that OEM rear shock. I had the Sachs on the Tuono and it felt a lot sportier!

Need some advice...should I go looking for a Ohlins? Is the Sachs good enougth for racing? I saw a WP racing shock for sale too and it looks pretty good with fast and slow response adjustments...

Buying a used shock can be a gamble, or a false "cheap" investment, or a good deal.

Let's say you buy the shock for $600. Have to re-spring it for $50. Get it serviced and freshened for $200. Now your cheap $600 shock is knocking on the door of a brand-new Penske.

On the other hand, the seller happens to weigh close to what you do, runs a similar pace, and has a receipt showing the shock was just serviced... That $600 shock is a good deal.

The WP is certainly better than the OEM Sachs, but as I've learned now that I've established a relationship with a local suspension & tire guy, finding a pro that can help you and is familiar with the shock is really helpful..
